[PIC] C8 Corvette Rendered with Round Taillights Looks Plain Jane

Remember the fuss when Chevy revealed the C7 Corvette and the taillights weren’t round?

You’d have thought someone had spit in Zora’s eye!

Well, earlier this week, a fellow named Andrew Switch Lanez – who bills himself as a former hardware engineer at Cisco Systems who is studying robotics engineering at Naval Postgraduate School – decided to use his artistic talents to appease those traditionalists who believe all Corvettes are not only red but they also have circular lights on the rear end.

He posted this rendering on Facebook after someone in Corvette Enthusiasts asked him to graft a C6 or C7 rear bumper onto the eighth generation mid-engine Corvette. Instead, he used a hybrid of the two designs as found on the Genovation GXE electric C7 Corvette. That explains the custom vanity tag and the fact there are no exhaust ports on this car!

I don’t know about you, but it just looks mighty dull – like that girl you asked to the eighth-grade square dance. She may have a great personality, but after seeing the drop-dead gorgeous girl everyone was drooling over, you just don’t want to dance with Plain Jane anymore. In short, round lights just don’t do justice to the ultra-modern, hip Stingray.

After seeing the forward-thinking rear end (is that an oxymoron?) created by Chevy’s talented group of designers for their new supercar, this retro treatment just doesn’t live up to all the hype of a car that is competing against the likes of Ferraris and Lamborghinis, does it?

The round lights really look great on a C6, but sometimes great design deserves to be left in the past. This is a prime example.

And speaking of designs of the past, there was talk in some circles about reviving the split window on the C7 and C8, but every rendering we’ve seen just doesn’t look nearly as good as the original ’63. We especially dislike those aftermarket spines that look really goofy on C5s and C6s. The C8 does pay homage to the split window styling cue in its own way, though, with body lines moving from the frunk across the roof and to the Stingray emblem on the back, with the V8 engine under the hatch serving as “the body” of the Stingray.

What do you think? Should some enterprising businessman quickly produce new rear ends for the C8, complete with round lamps? We think not.

  1. The original ZR-1 with the Outboard Marine aluminum DOHC engine (1990) didn’t have round tail lights and I don’t remember anyone complaining about that.

  2. I think the round taillights give it a clean, less cluttered look. Both the C7 and C8 looked like they were designed by a young Japanese designer on acid. Lines and vents and trim going every which way. I was really hoping for the C8 rear end design would bounce back after the C7’s rear end design, that ruin a otherwise very cool design.

  3. That rear end reminds me of a Nissan gt-r and that’s where it belongs. The C8 rear looks great and people need to get their heads out of the past.

  4. Clean less cluttered look????, NO, just plain UGLY, OMG, They did things right with what they have now, to those that don’t want change, try eating corn flakes for breakfast, every single day and then after a month, try and tell me that, you don’t want something different. Same thing when the C6 came out with exposed headlights, you swore that was the end of the Corvette forever. I have to wait a few years, but I will have one of these magnificent cars in my garage, along side of my 63, Sorry C6, I only have room for 2 Corvettes in my garage.

  5. There must be some DOT rule that says tail lights must be at least 8″ in diameter to meet regulations given the size of many cars’ tail lights today (yuck). My preference would be the lights from the C7, but in a slightly smaller height (width is ok). With the LED technology today, you don’t have to have a grapefruit sized bulb in order to put out a lot of light.
Although this rendering did clean up a lot of the odd shapes on C8’s rear, IMO, it could use a little rework.

  6. ALL comments are opinions: IMHO, ALL Corvettes should be red manual transmission convertibles with pop up headlights AND round taillights. IMHO. that rendering looks great.

  7. I liked the tail lights on my 59, 63, 74, 82, 84, 02,
and 11 corvettes. But I love the tail lights (and everything else) on my 2020 HTC.

  8. Agree with Jeff (guess he’s old like me). Round tail lights should be a standard on all Corvettes. I love the round tail lights on my ’72 and the “almost” round tail lights on my ’07. The rendering at the beginning of this article just looks GREAT.

  9. I have NOT been a fan of the Camaro rear tail lights since the original design. I feel there’s a much better solution and beautiful way to get it done. The same volume where the current lights reside should be looked at and a more elegant design done.

  10. I know old heads love the round taillights, but why try to force what you like on people that will still be walking, while you are six feet deep?

  11. I would love the round tail lamps. I do not like the camaro style. I would change it if I could.

Also I like more smoothend lines…

The c7/c8 looks cheap and lack the pedigree of long establised Brand.

It is like Ferrari vs Lamboghini… The Ferrari will still look amazing in 50 years where as the Countach just look old.

Pls respect my opinion… you do not have to agree, but all the bashing is …

  13. I think many people have it backwards, Camaro copied Corvette. I agree “all the bashing is … well … not worth reading”, and I don’t.
