[VIDEO] Speed Phenom Nukes the Brakes on his C8 Corvette Z51 at the Track


If you plan to track your mid-engine Corvette, you might want to watch and learn from the latest video from C8 owner and popular YouTuber Speed Phenom.

After just two or three heavy sessions at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, in his Torch Red 2020 Corvette, he reports that his brake pads on all four corners were toast.

And with a replacement cost of $1,200 for the set, ouch, that’s one expensive lesson.

Speed Phenom learned the hard way that it’s a great idea not only to have fluids, tools, and safety equipment but also extra brake pads. As it was, Speed Phenom sweated it out on his 200-mile journey back home, praying that the obliterated pads would be sufficient to get him there safely.

We’re happy to report that he and the Corvette did indeed make it back okay, and after waiting a month for delivery, he was finally able to install the new pads and is amazed at how small they are, especially compared to his GT500. Take a look at the unusual gold and blue stains on the old pads, almost like they caught on fire, he believes, a phenomenon he says he’s never seen.

While the Brembo Z51 brake pads seem to wear quickly on the C8, Speed Phenom is very pleased with how well the tires are lasting, saying he still has plenty of life left in them.
