[PICS] FVS Renders the C8 Mid-Engine Corvette And Dishes Thoughts on the Side Scoops

One of the areas of the C8 Mid-Engine Corvette that has confounded enthusiasts is trying to determine the exact design of the side air-intake scoops that will feed air to the engine. From the first “nearly-naked” sightings in Nurburgring to those just spied over the last couple of weeks in Detroit, it’s clear that Corvette’s designers are still hiding the exact shape of those scoops.

C8 render designer FVS from the MidEngineCorvetteForum.com has put together a new side render of the C8 Corvette and he explains his thoughts on the side scoops’ designs with additional illustrations that use some of the CAD images that were leaked over a year ago.

From FVS:

Based on the paint shop image of the rear fender (GRAY) to the right of the rear fascia (RED)

This is the way the fender sits. Even tho there is no “scoop” detail visible, we can see a bit of confirmation of the upper fender crease and down angle as I suspected.

The actual scoop “box” surround will be different than what we are seeing in the camo images and seems to suggest a more refined and sculpted transition. I am working on a new render that could be closer. I Think both Chaz and BDS have many elements of the correct look and thank them for all their effort!

Also note the yellow holes behind the scoop. (In the CAD and my overlay) They are at the same height and straight to the wheel well as the paint shop fender ends suggesting a separate bottom section to the fender. Maybe with additional brake cooling intakes for the z06/ZR1 models?

BDS agreed with my assessment of the outer shape (for now ; ) ) and included it in his model.

I always enjoy learning the “why” as in why does FVS have the scoop rendered as he does and with the additional illustrations that show how the CAD images fit into a design really helps to understand the engineering behind it.

The conversation goes on with FVS also sharing some additional images in regards to the shape of the scoop on the door itself. You can check out the rest of the comments at the MidEngineCorvetteForum.com.

  1. Door scoops? Check out an eighties Testarossa door architecture to see how the scoop(s) extend from the door several inches as part of the bodywork. Actually pretty cool idea, but probably adds to the cost to manufacture.
