A Girl in the 4th Grade Receives a Surprise After Writing to General Motors CEO Mary Barra

To whom much is given, much is expected, or so goes the old saying.

Mary Barra, the first female CEO of a major automaker, is living up to that adage in more ways than one.

Recently, the General Motors chief executive officer took the time to write a personal reply to a fourth grader from Alamance Elementary School in Alamance, N.C.

Brianna White, 10, had chosen Barra as part of a class project requiring students to send a letter to someone important.

Her father, Chris White, has worked for more than 28 years in the parts department at Dick Shirley Chevrolet and suggested that Brianna write to Barra, believing it could have a positive effect on his daughter to write to a successful woman.

After writing a rough draft, she corrected her errors and then dropped the two-page letter in the mail on its way to Detroit.

About a month later, a package arrived at the school – from Barra. As Brianna opened the box in front of her classmates, she peered inside and soon realized that not only did the CEO take the time to write a personal letter to her, but she also included a gift – a model of a silver C6 Corvette coupe.

According to her mom Angel White, Brianna was the only person out of the class of 25 students to receive a personalized thank-you letter and gift from the important person they wrote to. The teacher said Brianna was the “star of the year.”

We’ve been impressed with Barra’s leadership during her time with General Motors, and we’re not surprised she took the time to respond to Brianna’s special request. Maybe Brianna, inspired by the kindness of a big executive, will grow up to be the CEO of a big company, too.
