There’s nothing like a company operated by a person enthusiastic about what he’s selling.
That’s certainly the case with Wayne Walker, who founded Zip Products in his home garage in 1977 after he needed a gas line for his own 1961 Corvette.
Wayne learned how to bend steel tubing from a friend and then used his own skills with a flaring tool to make his own fuel line. His other Corvette buddies noticed his talents and began asking him to make fuel lines for them, too.
Thus was born Zip Products, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Saturday, May 6!
Wayne built his business by taking his products to every swap meet and Corvette show he could attend, and after 10 years in business, his single page of inventory had grown into a 128-page full-color catalog.
Zip Corvette expanded so much that they moved to 8067 Fast Lane in Mechanicsville, Va., and Wayne’s son started leading the company in 1994.
As Zip heads into its fifth decade of business, its call center and showroom have been joined by a thriving online store, social media presence, and website devoted solely to Corvette technical articles. The company has a reputation as a trusted traditional and online source for Corvette parts and technical information in an era when the industry has seen far too many Internet start-ups come and go.
Who would have thought in 1977 that a simple fuel line would lead to a company that now carries more than 40,000 Corvette parts, separated into seven generation-specific catalogs that are often seen right alongside the manuals and guidebooks in a Corvette owner’s garage. From early model restorers to seventh generation racers, fans of America’s Sports Car rely on Zip to keep their beloved Corvettes on the open road.
While Zip has definitely changed with the times, it’s still as committed as always to serving its customers to the fullest.
“We’ve been here for 40 years because our customer base trusts us and knows that we’re here for the long run,” said David Walker, who leads a sales staff that boasts more than 100 years of collective Corvette knowledge and many employees who have been with the company for decades.
“From showroom to call center to warehouse, we’re all together under one roof every day,” said Walker. “We greet some customers in-person at our front counter and we chat online or on the phone with others. We’re real people, selling real parts, in real time. That’s what sets Zip above the competition.”
From CorvetteBlogger, we wish Zip Products a happy 40th birthday, offer our thanks to them for helping enthusiasts enjoy their cars, and look forward to many more years of their service to the Corvette world!
