If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Don’t believe everything you read.

How many times did your dad tell you that growing up?

Well, a Wichita, Kansas man named Don Chambers nearly fell victim to a “little old lady” selling her late husband’s 1965 Corvette convertible for just $16,500.

Chambers saw an ad for the bargain of a lifetime in a magazine called “Wheels for You” while he was out shopping with his wife.

“I thought my gosh that’s awful cheap,” Chambers said.

His curiosity piqued, Chambers got in touch with the seller, who sent him a “whole bunch of pictures” and told him “she was in her 70s and she just lost her husband and she wanted to sell the car to somebody that would enjoy it.”

When Chambers asked to see the car, the woman said she didn’t want a stranger coming to her home but she had a solution.

“So she got it going and said well I will have you to do this Pay Safe Escrow,” he said. “What you do is you pay the money to them, they would hold the money and they would get the car shipped up here. I’d have three days to look at it and after the third day they would contact me and if it’s okay, they would send her the money.”

Fortunately, a red flag went up for Chambers, who said he had been hearing about scams on Channel 12 news.

He checked with the Pay Safe Escrow folks, who immediately told him that they didn’t know anything about the car and that it was a scam. So did Wheels for You representatives, who said they had removed the ad.

Chambers is worried, though, that someone else may still fall victim to the scheming granny.

“I called (Wheels for You) to let them know and they said they found out last week and they cancelled the ad but there’s a lot of it out there and I’m scared people out there will try to do this and be scammed out of money,” Chambers said.

“People will get hurt. Innocent people. Why should these people who are doing wrong benefit from these people where it’s their last dime because they really enjoy this?” he said.

  1. I read a story awhile back about an elderly couple who saw an ad for an old Mustang, that her husband found a few states away, and had to have. They drove out to the address, and were robbed and murdered. You have to be really careful , and thorough, when dealing with any of these situations.
