A black Corvette wound up on its top after a head-on collision that injured five people, including one critically, on Monday morning in Granite Bay, Calif.

Police are still investigating the crash, but California Highway Patrol Sgt. Tammy DuTemple said the Corvette appears to have crossed over the double yellow lines directly into the path of an oncoming silver Nissan sedan.

The Corvette driver, a 22-year-old college student, suffered major injuries and is at Sutter Roseville Hospital, officials said.

“A lot of people en route to Sierra College, lately, have been speeding,” DuTemple said. “And, this is obviously a result of speed.”

South Placer Fire District Battalion Chief Darren McMillin said both vehicles required extrication, “and so we ended up with a battalion chief, one ladder truck, three engine companies, and four ambulances.”

The driver of the Nissan was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy San Juan Hospital. Her 16-year-old son, who was celebrating his birthday Monday, was in the passenger seat and is in critical condition at Sutter Roseville. Her two daughters, 14 and 9, were treated for minor injuries at UC Davis.

While the crash was serious, it could have been even worse, DuTemple said.

“The guardrail that the black Corvette hit was just put up 10 days ago,” she said. “If the guardrail was not there, it could have resulted in more serious injuries.”

The crash, which happened about 7:25 a.m. on Auburn Folsom Road near Cavitt Stallman Road, tied up morning rush hour traffic.

Granite Bay resident Burr Sweeney said he couldn’t get out of his driveway, adding that speeders are a big problem on the road.

Bicyclist Thomas Tillman said motorists tend to speed along the way, from 50 to 55 miles per hour.

“A lot of them don’t seem to be paying attention to, you know, what’s going on on the road,” Tillman said.

“Well, you try to stay as far to the right as you can and then the rest is in God’s hands.”
