[VIDEO] Hackers Take Control of a C6 Corvette's Brakes Using a Smartphone

If your wipers start to act wacky or your brakes suddenly go on and off on your Corvette, you might be the victim of a computer hacker.

But university researchers in California say it’s not just Corvettes but most all modern vehicles that are subject to the whims of a malicious hacker.

Researchers at the University of California at San Diego have posted a video to YouTube that shows them activating the wipers and engaging or disengaging the brakes on a 2013 Corvette, just by sending an SMS message to the on-board diagnostics (OBD) devices that are used by insurance companies to keep up with your speed and location.

The researchers also say they could attack other systems – including the locks, steering, and transmission – on most modern vehicles just by making a few modifications.

Fortunately, after being alerted by the researchers, the company distributing the dongles was nice enough to wirelessly pushed security updates to the devices.

Still, we have to wonder where all this is headed. Could a terrorist attack target our vehicles, leaving us vulnerable as we speed along the nation’s highways?

Reportedly, the White House is requiring the use of the OBD monitors for any federal agency with fleets of 20 vehicles or more. That could leave our government open to terrorist hacks, not to mention all the ordinary folks like you and me who are just minding our own business on the nation’s roads.

If you plug a wireless device into your car’s internal network, you could apparently be opening yourself up to such hacks, at least according to these UCSD researchers. Having a vehicle that’s capable of hooking up to the Internet is great, but leave it to the bad guys for trying to ruin a good thing for ordinary Joes.
