If you’ve always wanted a C5 Z06 but didn’t like the fact that it wasn’t available in a convertible or targa roof configuration, then we might have the perfect car for you.
But you better hurry.
At its Las Vegas auction coming up Sept. 25-27, Barrett-Jackson will be offering one of only two GMMG/Skunk Werks Corvette convertible Z06 models in existence!
This yellow 2001 Z06 is special order prototype No. 1. It’s the only one with the GMMG Phase 2X6R package with an LS6 5.7-liter 525 hp, 500 ft-lbs of torque.
The 2X6R package will get you moving with seriously modified LS6 heads with a race version cam, header setup, GMMG chambered exhaust cat-back system, and GMMG air box.
You may notice in the photos that the car sits lower on custom chrome lightweight 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels.
GMMG had hoped to build 50 of these Z06 convertibles but canceled the project because the C6 was on the way and the company also had vendor-related problems.
As a result, only two of these convertibles were ever built by Skunk Werks and sold in the United States. Four others were sold in Canada, however.
A little background on the car. It began life as a C5 coupe and then had the top chopped and a custom-built and designed body kit added by John Cafaro (chief designer of the C5, by the way) and Henry Lovine of Skunk Werks.
