GM’s new commercial features CEO Ed Whitacre walking through an auto plant as he tells us that GM has repaid its government loans five years ahead of schedule. The commercial shows many of the successful cars and trucks in the GM lineup with a heavy dose of Malibu. At one point during Whitacre’s stroll, you can see what we think is a Cyber Gray Corvette ZR1 in the background. Although relegated to the role of extra, we appreciate that Corvette was in the mix, however briefly. Check out the video after the jump.

Kirk Bennion – GM’s Corvette Exterior Design Engineer – attended the 30th Annual Corvette Beach Caravan and Car Show in Panama City hosted by the Circle City Corvette Club at the end of March. In his presentation, Kirk shows the evolving design of the Corvette that became the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition. You’ll see a couple of designs that didn’t make the cut as well as learn how the movie “Underworld” played a role in creating the overall look of the Z06 Carbon.

GM reported March sales of America’s sports car set its best mark in three months with 955 Corvettes delivered. That mark is 331 more than February and 101 more than January. We’re glad to see the figure moving upwards but calendar year to date sales (Jan-Mar) are still -20% down from the same time period a year ago.
How well are sales going for the new 2010 Corvette Grand Sport? “Over half of the coupes and three-quarters of the Convertibles are being ordered as Grand Sports” said Harlan Charles, Corvette Product Marketing Manager for GM. National Corvette Museum Board Member and Corvette Assembly Plant Manager Bob Parcell said the Grand Sport has become the “most popular model of Corvette and overall Corvette sales are up this year.” As a result the Grand Sport will be featured by the National Corvette Museum as their fund raising raffles says Museum Executive Director Wendell Strode. “We thought we’d follow the trend and offer more of what customers are wanting.”

General Motors has filed a lawsuit in US District Court against Ohio-based Mongoose Motorsports LLC for producing replicas of the 1963 Corvette Grand Sport. GM has recently licensed the rights to Duntov Motor Co, who with Superformance, have started offering authentic Grand Sport reproductions for both track and street.

In this two-part video, they covered topics including the transfer of technology that goes hand in hand with racing and production and again they discussed the new 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.
Members of GM’s Corvette team were at the 12 Hours of Sebring on Friday, March 19, 2010 to unveil the new 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition. This new Corvette for 2011 features the Z07 package which includes the Corvette ZR1′s Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, front splitter, 19/20″ black wheels with Michelin PS2s, rear ZR1-style spoiler plus a custom suede interior.
We also learned some other new features for the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon not covered in the press release: A new tuned exhaust system, custom VIN and the ability to choose between different steering settings.
Automotive News reported that 10 GM studios across the globe have submitted designs for the next generation Corvette. GM’s VP of Global Design Ed Welburn says of the designs submitted, some “were absolutely phenomenal”. Welburn suggests the global initiative is part of an effort by GM to create a C7 that appeals to both buyers in Europe, where Corvette sales has gotten little traction, and to a younger US buyers, who tend to favor imports.
