One of the major design cues that separates the 2018 Corvette ZR1 from the C7 Z06 is the large hood bulge that covers the engine. Most Corvette watchers have pretty much come to the conclusion that the engine powering the ZR1 will be supercharged versus DOHC and its safe to say that it will be the same Gen V LT4 engine but with a larger volume supercharger.

The taller hood on the ZR1 is especially noticeable from the side. And in these newly seen spy photos, it sure looks like that when the hood is opened, the section covering the supercharger will remain on the car.

We came across these pics of the Corvette ZR1 prototype on the Corvette Forum’s C8 section of all places. It shows a small-wing ZR1 Coupe that stopped for fuel in the Detroit area. Corvette Forum member “KGrant” was able to do a quick walkaround of the prototype and it now appears the model will have an exposed supercharger.

Another new design cue that recently came to light are the gill-style vents on the side quarter panels. You can also see a ZR1 logo on the painted aumunium wheels:

This car wears the smaller wing and it’s mounted to the top of the Coupe’s rear end cap and doesn’t feature the mounts that go inside like we spotted earlier this year. We did notice that there is a full-width lip that runs across the back over the top of the third brake light. The coupes hatch is normally contoured in that area but the lip spoiler creates a straight edge across the rear. The same lip spoiler was also spotted on the Torch Red ZR1 Convertible with the large wing. See how it looks flat in this photo but in a previous sighing, there is just the wing that is mounted with openings in the rear end cap:

We’re not sure what this means at this point but you can see the change between these two small wing coupe prototypes. It could be that the Adaptive Aero system is optional and some will have it and others will simply have a fixed wing.

There is a lot to digest here and I would love to know you think. I believe these photos finally show how the hood design will function. And now Corvette enthusiasts will be asking if the supercharger will be viewable much like the C6 ZR1 that featured a polycarbonate window to show off the LS9.
