An apparent carjacking Saturday afternoon led to a crash with what appears to have been a nicely restored mid-1970s Corvette coupe in Helena, Ala.

ABC 33/40 TV reports that the crash sent three people – apparently two passengers in the Corvette and the alleged carjacker – to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The black Corvette was badly damaged on the driver’s side, with the front fender and engine compartment smashed. Accidents like this make us thankful for the airbags and other modern safety conveniences of today’s Corvettes.

Helena Police say they received an advisory from Hoover Police at approximately 1:10 p.m. that a white 2012 Nissan Altima had been stolen at a service station on Highway 150 at Shades Crest Road.

The suspect apparently carjacked the Altima, ordering a passenger out of the car at the time of the theft. Ten or 15 minutes later, a Helena Police officer spotted the stolen car headed east on Highway 52 from Hoover into Helena.

The driver saw the police car and began driving erratically and dangerously, passing other vehicles and accelerating to a high rate of speed, Helena Police said in a statement.

That officer notified other officers of the suspect’s location and driving behavior and turned on his emergency equipment, then turned around to try and keep the Altima in sight. Another Helena officer also saw the Altima pass him and fell in behind it as it turned north onto Highway 261.

After less than a half-mile, the suspect had speeded up and gotten too far ahead of the police for them to safely try to keep the Altima in sight. The suspect vehicle kept traveling north on Highway 261 through the Old Town section of Helena and eventually struck the Corvette headed southbound on that highway.

After Helena officers arrived at the crash scene, they rendered aid to the suspect and the occupants of the Corvette.

After the Shelby County Traffic Homicide Task Force completes its investigation, it’s likely that criminal charges stemming from the crash will be brought against the driver of the stolen Altima by the Task Force. Helena Police say they will also bring charges against the alleged carjacker.

In response to a post on Facebook that said “I thought it was against the law to chase someone and then they hit others and cause injuries,” Helena Police answered: “it is our position that the crash was caused by the foolish and illegal actions of the suspect driving the stolen car. He began driving recklessly and erratically as soon as he saw a police officer. Even before the lights were engaged or the officer turned around on him. He continued this behavior even after the officers backed off because of the speed and traffic conditions. It is indeed illegal to do something against the law (such as Attempting to Flee or Elude the police or DUI) and cause a traffic accident that causes injury. It is fully expected that the suspect in this case will be charged criminally for those injuries. Had HPD officers not stayed as close as they safely could and use their lights and sirens as early warning for unsuspecting drivers, it is almost certain there would have been more crashes.”

  1. These aren’t accidents. It’s what happens when douchebags drive that way. As are 99.999% of “accidents”. They aren’t accidents. They are douchebag induced collisions.
