GM Opens The Drive in Las Vegas

0

GM opened its “autotainment” experience, The Drive last week at the Sahara casino in Las Vegas. “The Drive” will feature two professionally-designed driving courses, including a high-performance loop and an off-road adventure with two trails over a dirt terrain. Located at the Sahara Hotel & Casino and just steps from The Strip, “The Drive” is situated on 11 acres leased by GM from the hotel. The performance course features a half-mile paved route with jogs and turns complete with chicanes to enjoy both the speed and handling control of pure sports car driving thrills. Vehicle choices unleashed on the Performance course include: the Chevy Corvette; the Pontiac GTO; the 400-horsepower Cadillac CTS-V; the Pontiac Solstice, the Cadillac STS-V; and the Saab 9-3 convertible. The off-road course gives consumers looking to navigate a tunnel, hill climb, v-ditch and sloped banks, moguls and obstacles. While the HUMMER H2 and H3 are the stars of the off-road course, you can also test the Chevy Silverado Diesel, and once available, the redesigned 2007 models of the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon Denali, Cadillac Escalade and Chevy Suburban. “The Drive” hours of operation are preliminarily set to be 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. seven days a week, including holidays. The Drive is accessible from the GM Monorail station at the Sahara Hotel & Casino, and parking is available at the hotel’s self parking structure or valet. Drivers must be age 18 or over, and present a valid driver’s license. Professional drivers (as passengers) will accompany each driver to help them get the most out of their driving experience. For the safety of all guests, on-site breathalyzer tests will be part of the mandatory registration process before guests can enjoy The Drive experience. More information about “The Drive” can be found at www.TheDriveVegas.com

In addition to posting a photo for the real Atomic Orange (word is someone leaked the wrong color, whether intentional or not nobody is talking), Rick has posted the 2007 production changes that we can expect to see on next year’s Corvettes. Corvette Values: 1968 Corvette Convertible

0

RP from NJ submitted the following to Corvette Values: 1968 Convertible. VIN 194678S4000XX. Repainted Burgundy. Black vinyl interior. 33,500 miles on a non-original 350/350 engine and 4-speed transmission. Corvette has power steering, power brakes and telescopic steering column. No documentation. Car is in average, good street driven condition.
This Corvette was built early in the 1968 model year, in fact during the first month of production in September 1967. It is reported to have 33,500 miles on the odometer. It’s powered by a non-original 350/350 engine coupled with a manual 4-speed transmission. The engine compartment is clean and has the correct air cleaner and ignition shielding. The non-original Burgundy paint and Black vinyl interior are classified as being in good condition and, with the chrome bumpers and wheel trim, present an attractive profile. The body panels and interior are “stock” with no modifications. Also, the Black convertible top and rear window are in good condition as are the front and rear chrome bumpers. The wheels are correct including he wheel trim and center caps. Factory options include power steering and brakes as well as a telescopic steering column. These “comfort” options are desirable. We place a value of $19,500 on this 1968 Corvette Convertible. From a substantiation perspective, one in similar condition sold at the Mecum Classic and Collector Car Auction in Orlando last January for $19,500. Of interest is the one year appreciation factor in average price on the 1968 Corvette Convertible which is 10%. Submissions:
Send your submissions to [email protected] with “Corvette Values” in the subject line. We can’t answer them all, but if we find your Corvette interesting to both us and our visitors, we may use it. Feel free to submit a photo as well.

Retired Ford Engineers Build Corvette-Based Speedster

0

What do a bunch of Ford engineers do with their spare time now that they’ve retired? They build a Corvette-based custom roadster called the GDT Speedster. The group used the LT1 engine, drivetrain and suspension components from a 94 Corvette donor car because of its proven V8 reliability. The windshield came from a Jeep Cherokee and the door hinges from a Ford F-150. While the car is titled as a Corvette, more than 2000 were designed and fabricated from scratch. The Speedster took 5 years of work and now that it’s complete, the group plans to auction it and start a new project. The winner of the auction will receive in addition to the full blueprints and service manual, a 1:8 scale clay model. How cool is that!

Check out the GDT Speedster’s site for more photos and videos. HatTip: AutoBlog via The Detroit News

Lance Armstrong and Corvette Z06 To Pace Indianapolis 500

0

Two racing icons will unite when Lance Armstrong , seven-time Tour de France winner, drives the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 pace car to lead the field to the start of the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 28, 2006 . For a record 17th time, a Chevy will pace the race, and it’s the eighth time for a Corvette to be leading the pack. Neither Armstrong nor the Corvette is a stranger to elite endurance racing. Armstrong won seven consecutive Tour de France titles, and the Corvette Z06 pace car he’ll be driving is based on the C6.R Corvette racer that has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four out of the past five years. “We’re proud that this year’s Indianapolis 500 will showcase the new 505-horsepower Corvette Z06 and honored that it will be driven by another racing icon—Lance Armstrong,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet General Manager. “The 2006 Corvette Z06 is infused with technology from our own endurance racer—the four-time Le Mans winning C6.R Corvette race car—and having it play such a key role at this important event acknowledges the significance the vehicle has played in American culture for more than 50 years.” As the No. 1-ranked cyclist in the world in 1996, Armstrong competed as a member of the U.S. Cycling Team in the Summer Olympic Games. While seemingly at the top of his game, he was literally forced off his bike because of cancer. He formed the Lance Armstrong Foundation within months of his diagnosis to help others with their cancer struggles. Armstrong then staged an incredible comeback, winning his first Tour de France title in 1999. After seven consecutive victories, Armstrong retired following the 2005 race and continues to be a leader and activist on behalf of cancer survivors around the world. The Lance Armstrong Foundation has become among the most influential organizations of its kind and provides practical information and tools people need to battle cancer and live strong through education, advocacy, public health programs and research grants. The 2006 Corvette Z06 that will serve as the Indy 500 pace car is virtually identical to the models available today through local Chevrolet dealerships. Because the production Corvette is so racing-ready with 505 horsepower capable of 198 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds, sophisticated aerodynamics, a suspension that can handle 1.01 Gs in cornering situations and large 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels that are a foot wide in the rear, the only changes made to prepare it for this year’s role were the addition of strobe lights and racing safety gear. With the Indianapolis 500 being such a classic American race during Memorial Day Weekend and with Chevy’s “An American Revolution” campaign, the Corvette Z06 pace car features an Americana red, white and blue theme. It displays an abstract U.S. flag pattern with “Victory Red” and “Cobalt Blue” ribbons flowing across the car on a base of “Arctic White” with white stars flanking each side. The 2006 Indy 500 logo is on each door, and the Chevy red racing Bowtie appears at the top of the hood. The race will be broadcast live on May 28 by ABC Sports and the IMS Radio Network. The green flag drops at 1 p.m. EDT. Tickets are available for the 2006 Indianapolis 500. For information, log on to http://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com or call the IMS office at 800-822-INDY or 317-492-6700.

Atomic Orange Color Unveiled

0

DigitalCorvettes.com has posted the first photos of the new and only color change for 2007 – 83U Atomic Orange. The color replaces Daytona Sunset Metallic which ended its run on April 1st. These photos first the web on Friday afternoon and due to the close proximity to April Fool’s Day had a lot of folks asking if this was a joke. The color is reminiscent of the Corvette Orange of the mid-seventies. I would have preferred to see GM go in a different direction so we’ll see what the marketplace decides.
