One of the rarest Corvettes of the C5 era recently sold for a world record price. This red over blue and white 1999 Callaway C12 just found a new home via Hagerty Marketplace after a $235,400 sale.
Callaway has been synonymous with Corvette since the RPO B2K twin turbo option package debuted in 1987. The Callaway name now symbolizes the ultimate in Corvette performance and engineering. After the factory forced induction option ended after the 1991 model year, Callaway continued to provide next-level aftermarket Corvette performance options for discerning owners.
When the 5th generation Corvette debuted in 1997, Callaway had an entirely new platform to work with. Using knowledge learned on the track at Lemans, they developed the Callaway C12 Corvette based on the new C5 architecture. Just 20 C12’s were built and only 2 were in Speedster form.
The striking red example that recently sold on Hagerty Marketplace was offered at no reserve by its original owner. He ordered the car after seeing C12’s at the Detroit and New York Auto shows. From there, it was off to Old Lyme, CT to order his special Corvette.
The car features a lengthy list of Callaway options. The most notable of which is the Bright Red exterior that’s complemented by the “My Favorite Blue” and white interior. A blue soft top completes the bold look of this American supercar.
Power comes from a 440hp SuperNatural LS1 engine that’s mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Other options include the Lemans brake package, coil-over suspension, carbon fiber cockpit package, custom carpet, and chrome wheels. Signature Callaway Double D exhaust peeks out of the bottom of the rear fascia. The included Callaway window sticker documents all the added equipment as well as an initial sales price of $224,000!
Today the car shows just 2,700 miles. The sale included a stack of documentation including the aforementioned window sticker, correspondence from Reeves Callaway himself, the Callaway Certificate of Authenticity, and more.
We caught up with this special Corvette at Amelia Island, and like all Callaway C12’s, its striking appearance will stop you in your tracks. The record setting sale reinforces the fact that rare cars in excellent condition with known history, and ironclad documentation will always ring the bell when offered for sale.
