Corvettes for Sale: Ex-Stu Hayner 1989 Corvette Challenge Race Car on BaT

For Corvette racing fans, few eras evoke more nostalgia than the late 1980s Corvette Challenge series—a short lived but fiercely competitive spec racing battleground that helped define the C4 Corvette’s legacy.

Now, one of those rare machines, a 1989 Chevrolet Corvette Challenge car driven in period by champion Stu Hayner in the SCCA Showroom Stock class, has resurfaced on Bring a Trailer, drawing attention from collectors, racers, and even the car’s original owner.

The Arctic White C4, chassis 1G1YY2184K5110088, wasn’t just another Challenge car—it was the very first one produced for the 1989 season. Delivered new to Tom Bell Chevrolet in Redlands, California, it initially served as a backup before Hayner took the wheel for 10 races during the ’89 campaign.

As the listing notes, it carries the full suite of factory sanctioned upgrades: a 5.7 liter L98 V8, ZF six speed manual, limited slip differential, 17-inch Dymag wheels, and the Delco Bilstein FX3 Selective Ride Control system. The seller notes that the “Service Ride Control” warning light is illuminated, and the air conditioning system is incomplete.

Like approximately half of the 60 Challenge cars built for ’89, this one was shipped to Powell Development America in Wixom, Michigan, for race prep—uprated engine internals, brake cooling ducts, and the distinctive dual exhaust outlets that exited through the lower quarter panels. A brass plaque included with the sale confirms its conversion was completed on June 15, 1989.

Today, the car shows just 3,600 miles, most of them accumulated during its racing life. It still wears its blue graphics and taped over lighting, and the tinted glass roof panel retains Hayner’s name. The interior remains pure period race car: roll cage, ATI seats with red bolsters, Sabelt harnesses, Corvette Challenge embroidery on the headrests, and a fire suppression system.

The car has been with its current seller since 2011 and has not been tracked under their ownership. It’s offered on a bill of sale only—no title, no registration, and not legal for road use. But for collectors, that’s hardly a drawback. The sale includes historical documentation, period photos, spare parts, and even an extra L98 engine mounted on a stand.

As the auction gained traction, the comments section lit up with memories and clarifications. One former GM Tech Center employee recalled seeing the car on campus in the late ’80s. Another commenter texted Hayner directly to let him know his old ride was back in the spotlight. And in a rare twist, the car’s original owner chimed in to confirm its authenticity: “HELLO, I am watching this auction with much interest. I am the original owner of this car bought directly from TOM BELL CHEVY. This car is the real deal,” he wrote.

Even seasoned racers and historians weighed in, noting the era’s unique blend of showroom stock roots and intense preparation. “While they are considered ‘stock-ish’ by the sanctioning bodies, you had to fully massage every aspect of the cars into absolute peak form if you wanted to be competitive,” one commenter observed.

With bidding already underway, reaching $35,000 already, and the auction set to end March 3, the car stands as both a collectible artifact and a tangible link to a beloved chapter of Corvette racing history. Whether it becomes a museum quality showpiece or is painstakingly returned to track ready form, one thing is clear: this ex Hayner Corvette Challenge car still has the power to stir the passions of those who remember the roar of a spec series C4 at full song.
