Team Zora USA to Take on Multiple 1000 Miglia Racing events in 2024, 2025

With the mid-engine C8 finally fulfilling the long-time dream of Corvette’s first chief engineer, now has never been a better time to honor the legacy of Zora Arkus-Duntov.

That’s exactly what Mike Moss, a historic sports car racer, and Marty Schorr, a long-time friend of Zora’s and founder of VETTE Magazine, are planning to do over the next two years.

The two men have organized TEAM ZORA USA, which made its first public appearances over the weekend of Aug. 14-17 at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. More such appearances are planned for 2024 and 2025 at multiple 1000 Miglia events in the United States and Italy.

“During the 1960s and 1970s, Zora and I had a wonderful relationship,” Schorr says. “It started when I was editor of Hi-Performance Cars Magazine, later evolving when I consulted on the building and marketing of Baldwin-Motion’s Phase III GT, the first ‘tuner’ Corvette. Just after he retired in 1975, I founded VETTE Magazine and produced it for five years. It was the first regular-frequency newsstand magazine for Corvette enthusiasts and was continually published for more than 40 years.”

Moss says he and Schorr have assembled a dream team of racers, racecar builders, and tuners, a former GM and Chevy engineer and restoration specialist with significant Corvette credentials, and a team manager specializing in travel and hospitality, to support their TEAM ZORA USA mission.

Last weekend at Laguna Seca, Jake Angel of Washington raced the historically significant 1960 fuel-injected Corvette, prepped by legendary Corvette racer and tuner Larry Webb. The car dates back to 1960 when Dave MacDonald raced it for the first time on July 4 at the Rose Cup in Oregon.

In the coming months, Moss will send his Spirit of Zora 1957 fuel-injected Corvette into action at multiple 1000 Miglia events in the United States and Italy, including the 1000 Miglia Warm Up USA in Virginia October 2024 and the 43rd re-enactment of the Red Arrow, the 2025 1000 Miglia in Italy, that is slated for June 2025 and will feature a field dominated by iconic Italian, English, German, and French sports and GT cars.

The original Mille Miglia (Italian for 1000 Miles) was held in 1927 as a speed/endurance race on public roads between Rome and Brescia, quickly becoming known as the “World’s Most Beautiful Road Race” and later dubbed the “World’s Unique Traveling Museum” by Enzo Ferrari, as well as one of the world’s most dangerous road races. Indeed, a tragic crash that killed two drivers and nine spectators ended the Mille Miglia in 1957.

Today, the 1000 Miglia features historic cars built before December 31, 1957 and related to a car that competed in at least one Mille Miglia from 1927 to 1957. Other cars with historic significance are also eligible to take part on the Guest List, including the 1953-57 Corvettes.

Moss’ 1957 Corvette – which was the first production American car with an engine producing one horsepower per cubic inch displacement – is currently being competition-prepped for grueling 1,000-mile events by Tony Pardo at RM Motorsports in Wixom, Michigan.
