Earlier this month, MotorTrend gathered up a bunch of performance vehicles for its annual Performance Vehicle of the Year Award and one of those attending this year’s festivities was the 2024 Corvette E-Ray. As we read through the first test reports, it was apparent right away that MotorTrend’s judges had already moved beyond the E-Ray (The headline read: Could’ve Had a Z06) and we were correct in our assessment as the first performance hybrid from the BowTie brand found itself looking on from the outside when it came time for the finals.
And listen, we can understand that when you also have some very heavy hitters in the competition that included the Lucid Air Sapphire, the Ferrari 2965 GTB Asseto Fiorano, a McLaren 750S Coupe and a Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Most of these cars cost several hundreds of thousands of dollars and it shows in their performance capabilities.
However, we just came across this MotorTrend video showcasing two different drag races for the PVOTY competition and the E-Ray was ready for action! This drag race features two head-to-head matches with the first pairing being the Maserati MC20 versus the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and then the second match was between the Corvette E-Ray and the McLaren 750s. We’ve actually already seen the E-Ray vs 750s matchup previously as part of Edmunds’ U-Drags competitions, so we sorta guessed what was going to happen. But we’ll let you watch it first if you prefer:
At the end of the video, we get a leaderboard showing the top quarter mile times and the host tells us that the Ferrari people wouldn’t allow a head-to-head race, so we’re probably lucky the E-Ray was one of the four sportscars chosen to be featured in this video.
With an “as tested price” of $148,415 which is juiced thanks to the pricy carbon fiber wheels, the Corvette E-Ray still manages to punch way above its (considerable) weight and is able to get off the line quicker than the 750s. Had the race been run against the Maserati or the Porsche, the E-Ray would have been the clear winner.
