[VIDEO] Roll Race Pits Stock C7 Z06 Manual vs Stock C8 Z06

It’s the question that been asked ever since Chevrolet first introduced the C8 Corvette Z06 with its 670-hp naturally aspirated V8 engine back in October 2021: Would it be faster than the supercharged 650-hp C7 Corvette Z06 it was replacing?

On paper, racing these two Z06s against each other from a dig should benefit the C8 Z06 with its 60/40 rear weight bias over the rear axle. But what about a roll race where C7 Z06’s Achilles Heel – the launch – is negated? We’re about to find out!

This video takes place on a “closed course” according to the description, and both of these Corvettes are said to be stock. The C7 Z06 Corvette has a manual transmission, so it will definitely have its work cut out for it while shifting gears, as the C8 Z06s DCT offers lightening quick shifts. However, the C8 Z06’s extra-long torque curve means the car is no longer the torque monster in the lower gears like its predecessor, and it’s a couple of hundred pounds heavier as well.

For the start of each of these roll races, the Corvettes are cruising at 55 mph in 2nd gear:

  1. Nice, very evenly matched. The dude in the C7 needs to learn how to shift and why did he flip the C8 off the first time??? Why is 55mph in second stupid???? Don’t see how a auto C7 would have lost. They both weigh about the same with the same HP, so it should have been close. What the hell were you clowns expecting??? Lol, ya I can think of many other minute and a half vids being a much bigger waste of time. So Robert, where is your stellar vid then huh?????

  2. It was evenly matched, although it always kinda annoys me when they put an automatic or DCT against a manual. I have a manual ’19 C7ZO6/ZO7, and I’m sure from a standing start the C8Z would win, but that’s a traction issue, anybody that owns a C7Z knows all about that. But the C7Z is a torque monster, and from a roll I will leave the C8Z behind. What will really interest me is meeting a C8Z on a road course, I’m guessing that may favor the C8Z, especially if it’s not one with really long straights. I was on a C8 ZO6 list, but as much as I like it, the car seems more track car than street car, and although I like the track days, most of the time is on the street, so I moved over to the E-Ray list. Not looking like I’ll get a ’24 E-Ray, more likely a ’25, and I’d like to keep my C7 ZO6 as well, it’s a great car.

  3. C8Z is nice but I would keep the C7Z M7. Manuals keep you connected to the car and road. Much more fun than just stabbing the gas pedal and flicking buttons on the steering wheel. Leave that stuff for the guys who do video games.

  4. Nice video. Own 19 Stingray LT3 manual. Would like to find a one owner C7Z with low mileage. Would like ALL original no mods. Love my Lady Red manual. Its a fun car. Yoo-hoo.

  5. Interesting. So my C7 Z06 A8 with CAI, PTB, headers, exhaust and tune would walk a C8 Z06 in a roll race. Interesting. My desire to get a C8 Z06 has suddenly disipated. I drove a C8 Z51 at a track day and all I could think at the time was how much slower it was than my, then, stock C7 Z06. I had at least excpected the DCT to make a difference in this race but not so.

  6. TK, a C8Z will clean house on the C7Z on a road course. I was on VIR with one last summer and I’m running on Hoosiers too and couldn’t touch it. And I’m a reasonably good driver…I can do a 2:04 at both VIR and Watkins Glen which isn’t terrible.
