By Sunday night, somebody will definitely become the owner of a nice ’72 driver currently being auctioned off on eBay – at no reserve.
This black-on-black Corvette Stingray convertible isn’t in perfect condition, like any 50-year-old anything, but it still looks nice enough both cosmetically and mechanically to be an enjoyable yet low-priced entry into the Corvette community. By the way, that black paint wasn’t a choice out of the 10 colors available from the St. Louis factory in 1972, if you’re into originality.
With two days left in the bidding, 40 offers have already been placed, climbing to $19,100.
This Corvette is said to run and drive “nice” and is described as a “solid” vehicle with “nice” paint and interior.
Mechanically, the owner says it’s a “great running” car with its 350/200 horsepower motor and four-speed manual transmission having been rebuilt 20,000 miles ago. The clutch earns a “good” rating, and a “newer” exhaust system is in place. “Most” of the gauges and the headlights are functional, which we assume means they light up as well as pop up into place. On the other hand, the A/C compressor will need some attention as it “turns” but air doesn’t come out, and the wipers don’t work at all.
The convertible top is described as “nice,” but the accompanying black hardtop will need new weatherstripping.
Overall, the seller describes his Corvette as being a “very nice straight old car that runs and drives fine, but like any 50 year old, it does need some TLC on some things.”
When it’s all said and done, however, only 27,004 Corvettes were built in 1972, in the process becoming the last of the double chrome bumpers, and furthermore, just 6,508 of them were convertibles. What would you be willing to pay to drive this classic ‘Vette down the road in your hometown?
