Illinois Representative Has Classic Corvette Torched in Suspected Arson Case

On his website, Illinois Rep. La Shawn Ford (D-101) of Chicago says he believes tenacity and perseverance can conquer even the most difficult challenges.

The Eighth District state representative is currently facing a big personal challenge after someone torched his garage Monday night, with his vintage 1979 Corvette and a Ford SUV inside. No one was injured.

Chicago police say someone stole a third car and set it on fire about 9:45 a.m. after parking in front of Ford’s garage, located in the 900 block of South Mayfield Avenue.

At the scene, police found the burning vehicle – unknown to Ford – in the middle of an alley, along with an Illinois license plate near the car. Whether the tag belonged to that car couldn’t be immediately determined by police because the vehicle was totally burned. A security camera captured a person walking near the car in the alley when smoke started coming from it, police said.

Video from the scene shows what appears to be a black 1979 Corvette, with the paint on the front bumper bubbling up from the heat. Fortunately, it appears that the car might not be badly damaged.

Police say the arson section and Area 4 detectives are investigating, adding that the blaze spread to a neighbor’s garage in the 900 block of South Mason Avenue.
