[ACCIDENT] C5 Corvette Convertible Collides with a Tractor-Trailer and the Crash Shuts Down I-40

The driver of a white C5 Corvette had to be airlifted to Mission Hospital on Monday afternoon after a fiery multi-vehicle chain-reaction crash on I-40 in Haywood County, North Carolina.

The Corvette and a tractor-trailer carrying frozen food collided as both vehicles were headed eastbound on I-40. After the crash, the Corvette wound up upside-down along the edge of the road, while the tractor-trailer careened over the concrete dividing wall and crashed into three other vehicles in the westbound lanes. The truck and one of the vehicles it hit then erupted in flames.

In addition to the Corvette driver, the driver of the tractor-trailer and an SUV driver had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment. Another person involved in the crash drove themselves to the hospital. No word on the extent of the injuries was released by the North Carolina Highway Patrol, which is still investigating the cause of the accident.

Traffic was shut down on the eastbound lanes of I-40 for about two hours after the crash, but the westbound lanes were closed until about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire damaged part of the westbound lane, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation said crews worked overnight to repave that section of the road.
