[VIDEO] C5 Corvette Racer Takes on a Hill Climb Competition at Pine Mountain, Kentucky

“Shortcutsleeping” – SCS – may have been taking on his first hill climb back in March, but you’d never know it was his first competition in such an event.

SCS says he has always wanted to do a hill climb, and finally, the circumstances worked out where he was able to borrow GSpeed’s Louis Gigliotti’s SLJHMR C5 Corvette (a two-time national champion) at Pine Mountain, Kentucky on March 23-24.

“Sure, I’ve been fortunate enough to do big fast autocrosses, off-road stage rally, road racing in many forms (TT, sprint, endurance, crapcan), and some asphalt circle track,” SCS explained in a post afterward on Corvette Forum, “and heck, I’ve even done a demolition derby (which I won, woot), but I’ve always wanted to race up a hill. Changing pavement, camber, track temp, visibility … this always seemed like a sandbox I want to play in. Like many of you, I feel pretty darn alive when my complete and total focus is being absorbed and my mental processing speed is maxed out. So I was pretty sure this would do it.”

Despite some initial troubles off the line, SCS managed to win his class, set a GT2 record, and finish with the fifth fastest overall car of the event. You can watch the results of his impressive debut in this online video.

Not bad for a rookie.

“As I laid down to sleep and recapped the day, this hill climb stuff is freaking awesome,” he posted. “It is like a big autocross with limited sight lines and bigger penalty for errors. The reward, however, is freaking amazing. Flying around those blind corners and analyzing the road and knowing where to put the car and what speed to carry and the dozens of other mission-critical things happening in a very compressed moment of time are amazing. Even with the car issues, I know that I completely love this sport and can easily see why folks are attracted to it.”

  1. Love that sound. Suspension setup was dang good. My C5 (pfadt suspension) would have been dancing on those bumps.
