It’s time for a new episode of ‘This or That’ in which members of the Hoonigan YT channel race very different cars (and other vehicles) in a best of three format. This race brings together a C8 Corvette Stingray versus a 1970 Volkswagen Baja Bug. It’s not the strangest pairing we’ve seen, but an 850-hp VW should make things very interesting!
The bug is running a built 418 ci LS3 that’s topped with a 4.5L Whipple supercharger. The car runs on 110 octane racing fuel to make the aforementioned 850 horsepower while producing over 650 lb-ft of torque at only 2500 RPM! The owner of the car says “it gets very violent early.” The Baja bug is also equipped with a sequential 5-speed allowing the driver to bang through the gears quicker than a normal transmission. We find the coolest thing about the Bug is that it’s plated for the street and a quick clip shows it doing a wheelie down the boulevard.
The C8 Corvette is being run by another Hoonigan member and this car is a long-term test vehicle provided to them by Mobil 1. The car has been torture-tested (aka hooned) and it’s currently on its 2nd motor. Enhancements include KW coilovers and Cray wheels, but other than those two items, the car is mostly stock with a 495-hp V8 and 8-speed DCT.
Like any good street fight, the participants come together and attempt to work out the rules before any blood is spilled. With the Baja bug having 850-hp and weighing in at 2600 lbs, the C8 driver suggests a heads-up race to 1000 feet and then the race is on. I’m not going to spill the beans on the best of three, but there ended up being a bonus round as well. Fun stuff to watch and we’ll be looking forward to the Hoonigan’s next wacked “This or That” race featuring a Corvette.
