[VIDEOS] Let's Breakdown that Recent C8 Corvette Z06 Prototype Sighting

Screenshot Credit: Shooter / Corvette Forum

Earlier this week we shared a video of a C8 Corvette Z06 prototype testing out in Sedona, Arizona. If you haven’t seen it yet, it is good this will be first your look. If you have seen it, watch it again and see what we missed the first time around. So focused on trying to hear the flat-plane crank V8, we missed seeing the other mules and the Porsche in the background.

There has also been some debate starting with the original poster of the video that this prototype may have a manual transmission. Although we disagree, the blip from the driver and the subsequent take-off has others talking manual transmissions again, including our friend Mike from the Brink of Speed YouTube channel.

Mike breaks down the recent sighting and shows you what we missed the first time around and I will let him make the case as to why he thinks the Z06 will have a manual transmission (spoiler alert: it won’t).

From Brink of Speed on YouTube:

BIG NEWS! It Looks like the C8 Corvette Z06 will HAVE a MANUAL Transmission! Today, I wanted to bring this big news about the C8 Z06 to your attention! Will you order a C8 Z06 Corvette if it comes in a manual transmission?

So now that you’ve seen this enhanced version of the prototype sighting and heard Mike’s argument about the Z06 getting a manual transmission, let’s hear your thoughts by leaving a comment below.

  1. NO, IT WILL NOT HAVE A MANUAL
THE DCT IS FASTER AND IS THE WAY MOST HIGHER END SPORTS CARS ARE GOING.

THE C8 RACE CARS ALL HAVE THE DCT

  2. It makes sense theirs talk of redoing the console area on the C8 as it is now no room for a stick shift .Myself I just bought a Stingray manual and was happy its the last manual . I am a purist and had two split windows in my lifetime Don’t like a lot of add ons .My web page is Rtruman.com check it out Brink of Speed keep up the good work Richard Truman

  3. There will be no manual only a DCT due to performance. Listen again its not being driven in manual mode! Also per other proto types with the center exhaust- note the smaller exhaust-this exhaust is a way of hiding the sound of the turbos! These may be the ZR1’s or maybe the Z06 is turbo – doubtful! But unfortunate if you live at altitude. The Z06 will need to perform as the new 911 GT3 just went under 7 minutes at the ring! Will need to be somewhere between the GT2 RS and the GT3 in order to give this car the press it deserves per Corvette racing. I believe it will.

  4. Who cares if the DCT is “faster”? 99.9% of Corvette’s are driven by people who could never competitively track the car, auto or manual, even if they had a place to do it. The added dimension of being directly involved with the engine speed and car speed that a manual offers can not be replicated with an auto-stick. Using both feet and hands to drive an automobile is as much fun as it gets. Try it sometime.

  5. 70% of GT3 owners will opt for the manual! A DCT is faster, but nowhere near as enjoyable as a manual transmission. All my ZO6’S are equipped with a manual transmission, and so is my gen 5 Viper TA.

  6. If Corvette manual transmissions are shifted by cables, and the clutch is operated by a hydraulic line, why can’t a manual transmission be offered? Is it can’t or won’t? Please enlighten me. If many thousands of Corvette buyers would rather enjoy shifting their own gears while rolling on extra cost chrome wheels, what is GM trying to prove? Is satisfyingly more customers and making more options money suddenly out of vogue?

  7. GM bean counters are the reason the manual don’t exist. That’s coming from Tadge himself. Even though the Corvette sold a good quarter of the cars with the manual on the c7 GM thinks that’s not good enough. A better way to approach this is make only higher tiers of Corvette with the manual option and limited units like ZR1 Z06 gran sport/e-ray so the added cost is well cover buy customers of those cars. Corvette without a manual is throwing away part of its heritage with muscle/ sports car racing history

  8. Please, oh please make a manual for those of us who enjoy the interaction between driver and car. Yesterday I was discussing ordering a RHD C8 with the only official Corvette Dealer in the UK yesterday. A RHD C8 in the UK will cost circa $120K USD over here, – a serious amount of money. If it came with a manual option, I’d order tomorrow, even though delivery is a little vague…..

  9. I’m fine with some C8’s coming with manual transmissions, that just makes them easier to beat at the track.

  10. If you can’t change with your environment then you wind up pushing up daisy’s like the Dinosaurs!

The good thing about all the can’t live without a manual driver is that will keep the C8 waiting lists somewhat shorter.

  11. If we are all expected to “change with the environment”, then why are the majority of 911’s and MX-5’s still ordered with manual transmissions?

  12. I personally prefer a manual transmission as I love to have the interaction with the car. I realize the automatic is faster but I’m not here for street racing. I’ve kind of outgrown that. I also understand the need to offer their best automatic, but I should have a choice. I have an automatic C8 on order, but if I could change to get a manual, I would do it. If I want to drive an automatic, I’ll drive my truck or my wife’s SUV. I can shift those with paddles as well. Are they fun—NO!

  13. Porsche just announced that 80% of US, GT3 buyers chose the 6 speed manual so don’t count the stick out yet.
Unfortunately, in an interview the C8’s chief designer revealed that the design on the C8 footwell makes adding a clutch pedal extremely difficult.

  14. I currently have a C7 manual. I never race, and don’t really care about my 0-60 time. For my next sports car I’ll be moving. up to a Porsche. That’s right, moving UP. Why up? Because manual.

  15. I have owned 11 Vetter over the years. No third pedal means no new Vette for me. I currently have a C7 ZO6 vert (7speed); 70 LT-I coupe (4speed) and a 66 427/390 vert (4 speed). The C8 is a great car but a nonstarter for me with only 2 pedals. Driving a manual in a Corvette is much more engaging and satisfying IMHO. Track times are irrelevant to me as I have never and will never track it. If the new C8 ZO6 is offered with a manual I am ready to place my order now. I hope the boys and girls at the Chevy asylum come to their senses.

  16. I have owned muscle-cars with manuals and automatic transmissions. I currently own a C6 GS with a manual transmission. It is my opinion that the majority of Corvette owners have them for pleasure and not as daily drivers. A manual transmission gives you the feel of being an integral part of the driving experience, whereas an automatic transmission may shift quicker, however the adrenaline experience won’t compare! I also own an AMG with a paddle shift automatic and can confirm the adrenaline experience won’t compare. The only exception that would make me consider an automatic in a Corvette would be if I lived in a densely populated area with lots of stop and start driving. I never cared for the C7, however I would definitely consider purchasing a C8 if it were offered with a manual transmission.
