The First Available 1984 Corvette to be Offered at Mecum Monterey

Now that the C5, C6, and C7 are here, some people don’t have as much respect for the C4.

But back in the day, those of us old enough can remember what a significant change the 1984 Corvette represented over the C3.

Having owned a 1980 L48 Corvette as my first Corvette, my second was a new 1986 model from Tom Jumper Chevrolet, and I can still remember taking my friends for a ride – showing off the clamshell hood, the one-piece targa top, the ultra-wide tires, the head-in the-back-of-the-seat performance with its whopping 230 horsepower (hey, it was powerful for the era!) and the gee-whiz Gameboy dash.

Others were just as impressed, including Brock Yates of Car and Driver, who called the fourth generation “a truly stout automobile” and “…a true-born, world-class sports car loaded with technical sophistication.”

The numbers backed up our excitement, too, with the C4 recording a .90 G-force on the skidpad, highest ever recorded by Car & Driver and much better than the .82 of the Porsche 928 and assorted Ferraris. The press labeled it the world’s best-cornering automobile.

Now comes the opportunity for an enthusiast to buy the first production C4 Corvette ever sold to the public at no reserve as Lot S8 at Mecum’s Monterey Auction to be held Aug. 13-15. It’ll be interesting to see how much this car brings, considering the prices of C4s are among the lowest of any Corvettes.

Only two people have owned this car, the current owner making his purchase in 1987.

The car is white with graphite interior.
