Is the economy so bad that even SpeedRacer has to part with his famous Mach 5 race car? Actually, we were tipped to this unique Corvette-based Mach 5 from a twitter user who passed by it on Ventura Boulevard where the car was on the lot of Woodland Hills Quality Motors in LA. The body style is similar to one of Mark Towle’s The Real Mach 5 replicas down to the wheels, but I couldn’t tell you if this is one of his or not. You can be SpeedRacer for just $27,995 although we are pretty sure that it doesn’t come with a monkey.
This Mach 5 replica tribute started life as a 1996 Corvette convertible. In fact, it appears that most of the C4 Corvette’s interior has remained stock. The Corvette is powered by an LT1 350 ci V8 coupled to an automatic transmission. Interestingly, the Corvette features a relatively low VIN sequence number of #172.
Of course the real draw is the custom body panels and lights that give it that unique look. Not that I would ever be caught dead in one of these, but I think I prefer this “Hollywood” version more than the C2-looking Mach 5 that was part of the pre-opening sweepstakes for the movie.
