Wrecked 2009 Corvette ZR1 for Sale on eBay

There is a reason that new Corvette ZR1’s come with a free 2-day driving course at schools like Bondurant. There is a lot of power in the 638-hp supercharged Corvette and while there are many technological features designed to keep you in control, sometimes shit happens that can be hard to do. While we don’t know the details of what happened to this Corvette ZR1, we did surmise the following:

Man stomps on accelerator, Corvette ZR1 gets sideways and whacks something really hard. Insurance covers accident and Corvette is put up for sale on eBay.

So we finally have come to the moment in the Corvette ZR1 timeline that we can check-off seeing the first damaged car being sold on eBay. VIN #00427 is a 2009 Cyber Gray Corvette ZR1 that looks like it took a hit to the driver’s rear quarter panel. From the looks of things, that back wheel is gonna need a serious alignment.

The auction details tell of some of the damage:

  • Cracks on the left side in the rear tub assembly
  • Rear bumper cover is TORN.
  • The lower control arms on the left rear are bent.
  • This is a fantastic Corvette with numerous features. A sure to please.

The ZR1 in the auction does please with its ZR3 Premium Package and the low 1,227 miles on the odometer. So what does a slightly used, slightly damaged Corvette go for? The opening bid is $75,000 and there is a “buy-it-now” at $97,500.

Ok….. Although I’m sure this particular Vette is worth every penny of the $75,000 asking price, I’m a thirty something on a budget with the dream of replaceing the running gear and power plant of my 65′ Impala with ZR1 gear. So my questioin is, is there such a thing as “affordable” parts to achieve this, (I make MUCH less than $100,000 a year)? I’m getting the feeling I shouldn’t hold my breath. If there is anyone out there that might have some leads or comparable alternatives I would be very grateful for the input.

    Thanks again.

  2. Hmm, a resto-mod project with an LS9 supercharged V8 isn’t for the faint of heart. The crate motor version can be had for around $20,000, but you’ll want to the beef up the suspension and brakes as well. I’m not sure what to tell you on this one. Anybody else have some ideas?

  3. A new 2011 ZR1 / ZR3 assuming a few minor options runs approximately $127,000 plus tax, tags and license. Assuming off the lot depreciation for a 2 year old ZR1 I’d peg a ‘mint’ 2009 at $90 – 95,000. Assuming what appears to be massive distortion of the rear axle and I suspect the ‘tube’ plus cosmetic repair I should think a new owner could be looking at anywhere from $20,000 – 30,000 to restore it. Forget the mileage, it’s meaningless in this case. $97,500 is out and out theft. Someone would have be crazy to pay that. I’d say a reasonable price (after a careful mechanical evaluation and estimate) would be $60-65,000. A reasonable opening bid would be $50,000 – 55,000. Face it, this guy screwed up. No amateur should ever drive this car without MR and PTM always on. Any prior Corvette without it will break it’s rear end loose quite easily from s standing start or when too much throttle is applied in turns.

  4. Mr. Cornett,
I know this blog is old, but oddly enough I have a 2009 ZR1 with nearly matching damage. I do know the facts of my loss and they are not at all about “man stomping on accelerator” but more about the ZR1 falling apart at normal speed 67 miles per hour going straigth down the highway. Is there anyway to know the facts of the loss on this vehicle. I would be very curious to know.
