This week marked the start of the Geneva Motor Show and Corvette Racing’s Oliver Gavin was there to talk about the similarities of the new 2015 Corvette Z06 to his weekend office, Corvette Racing’s C7.R race car.
For the second year in a row, Chevrolet driver Ryan Briscoe will be once again join Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia in the No.3 C7.R Corvette at the 12 Hours of Sebring. The inclusion of Briscoe kept the team competitive in 2014’s Daytona 24 Hour race as well as the 12 Hours of Sebring, but issues with the new C7-based Corvette racer kept the team from achiving any kind of real success.
But that was last year.
For 2015, the No.3 Corvette C7.R with Briscoe, Magnussen and Garcia took the checkered flag in the opening round of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship which gave Corvette Racing their first Daytona GT victory since 2001.
One of the cool things about the Corvette is its long family line after 62 years of production.
For instance, take these two cars featured in an AmeriCarna video on Velocity.com.
Though they’re separated by nearly 50 years, it’s easy to tell that the 1968 Corvette L88 “gave birth” to the 2015 Corvette C7.R race car.
While Corvette Racing has been planning on running the 83rd annual 24 Hours of Le Mans as part of its 2015 campaign, the race requires an invitation from the ACO. Last week the field was announced and the factory-backed race team did indeed receive two of the 21 at-large invitations available for the race at Circuit de la Sarthe in France this June.
The twin Velocity Yellow C7.Rs will join seven other cars to round out the GTE-Pro class which will feature a total of nine entries.
Now that Jeff Gordon has announced 2015 will be his final full-time season competing in NASCAR, he’s already thinking about what the future may hold.
Though he’s made millions over his very productive stock car career and could likely spend the rest of his life relaxing at an island resort, Gordon no doubt will want to continue to dabble in racing.
In fact, at last Thursday’s NASCAR Media Day, he told reporters he would like to compete in an occasional endurance seat after he’s retired.
Helping the team of Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia win last weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona apparently has iced another race for Ryan Briscoe.
Autosport is reporting that Briscoe has been tapped to compete again with Corvette Racing in the Le Mans World Endurance Championship in June, though official confirmation isn’t expected until Feb. 5 when the entry list will be released.
Briscoe himself is remaining quiet about the decision, saying only that “hoped to go back” to compete in Le Mans.
