Appreciating Corvettes: Top 12 Price Gainers of 2007

The 2007 ‘Corvette’ calendar was quite interesting in many ways. We particularly noted record prices for quality, documented first and second generation Corvettes. More and more of these models have been restored and brought to market, many with NCRS certification and Bloomington Gold Awards in tow. These vehicles continue to sell at top dollar while those termed in ‘average’ condition are showing somewhat positive results, however not in the double digit appreciation results we have see over the past few years.

Rare low production numbered Vettes continue to sell at record prices including late models. A classic example is the 1996 Grand Sport holding the #2 spot on our appreciation chart.

Data from the Corvette Price Guide comes from analyzing the selling prices of over 5,800 Corvettes during 2007 and then comparing the sales figures to years prior. That method has proven to be a statistically accurate measure of the Corvette Market.

The 1953 Corvette has shown astronomical results and was the hot ticket during 2007. Normally one or two surface each year, however, several were sold during the year at record prices.

The same holds true for the 1996 Grand Sport, a limited production Corvette made up of 190 Roadster and 810 Coupes. We noted a number sold with mileage numbers under the 300 mark.

The 1955 Corvette, another low production Corvette with only 700 built holds down the number three spot on the chart.

Much to our surprise, the 1954 model is caught up in the 1953 Corvette hype and has become a ‘tag-along’. However, in defense of the 1954 Roadster’s appreciation, we note that it does offer three rare factory paint colors, Black, Red and Blue.

The popularity of the first generation continues with the unique body panels and trim of the 1958.

The 1956 model, which follows in the Top Ten sequence for appreciation, was the first to offer an eight cylinder motor coupled with a manual transmission.

Two mid-year Corvettes are listed on the chart as well, the 1963 Coupe had been undervalued in recent years even though the split-window continues to draw special attention to this Corvette.

The mid-year icon, the 1967 Roadster, also makes a repeat appearance on this list. When one mentions mid-year Corvettes those words are usually followed by, “is or was it a 1967 Corvette”.

Three third generation Corvettes are on the chart and moving up in value. Many of the buyers recognize they cannot afford first and second generation Corvettes and are purchasing chrome bumper Corvettes that have numerous motor options and continued appreciation results.

2008 Corvette Price GuideOur Corvette classifieds website VetteFinders.com brings us the annual VETTE-N-VESTMENTS Corvette Pricing Guide and later this week, I will be posting an analysis of the Corvette Pricing Trends from 2007 on CorvetteBlogger.com. This year marks the 8th annual release of Corvette pricing data and it remains a feature unique to VetteFinders.com in the online Corvette classified’s arena.

The 2008 Corvette Price Guide contains data from the sales of over 5,800 Corvettes from last year to give us the High, Low, and Average prices of all Corvette model years and body styles. The guide also contains appreciation and depreciation figures for One, Two and Five years, as well as pricing for options including motors, wheels and A/C.

The free online version features the average prices of over 120 different Corvette models spanning 1953-2008. The top appreciation gainers were led by the 1953 Corvette which clocked in at 192%. The first-year Corvette has shown astronomical results and was the hot ticket during 2007. Introducing the 2008 Corvette 427 Limited Edition Z06

Paying respect to a classic is a great way to promote the future and GM has done that with their new 427 Limited Edition Z06 Corvette. The 427 remains as one of the most iconic car culture status symbols of the Sixties – in fact, there is probably no Corvette more coveted and collected than a Corvette with 427 big block engine. Today, Chevrolet’s Z06 also features a displacement of 427 cubic inches yet 21st century technology allows them to offer that power compacted into the 7.0 liter small block. The 427 Limited Edition Corvette also takes some styling cues from the Sixties 427 – featuring a Crystal Red exterior and 427 emblems affixed to the Black Stinger hood.

Each of these limited edition Corvettes is numbered and signed by the retiring Wil Cooksey, the man in charge of the Corvette Assembly Plant for the last 15 years. 505 of these Limited Edition Corvettes will be offered with 427 available in the US and Canada and 78 exported outside North America. The Corvette will retail for $84,195 and features the 3LZ premium equipment with a custom leather wrap interior and new chrome wheels.

Chevrolet’s Special ’427 Limited Edition Z06′ Salutes Classic 427 Corvettes

DETROIT – Chevrolet announced the 2008 Corvette 427 Limited Edition Z06, a limited-production model that pays homage to the big-block Stingray models of the mid-1960s. The 427 designation refers to the cubic-inch displacement for the highest-performance engines offered between 1966 and ’69 – and is also the cubic-inch equivalent of the Z06’s 7.0L LS7 small-block V-8.

The 427 Limited Edition Z06 features a Crystal Red Tintcoat exterior, the first Z06 ever offered with a red metallic tintcoat paint. It also features graphics on the hood and fascia that evoke the style of the famed “stinger” hood design and graphics that were offered with 1967 models equipped with the 427 engine. Also unique to this model are “427″ hood badges. Each example is numbered and signed by Wil Cooksey, the Corvette assembly plant manager who is retiring after 15 years on the job, and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

“The heritage of the 427 designation with the Corvette is legendary,” said Harlan Charles, Corvette product manager. “Recognizing the tie-in of the original 427 engine and the LS7’s 427-inch displacement has been on the Corvette team’s mind since the Z06 was introduced, and we’re thrilled to express it in this special model.”

Available under order code Z44, this special Z06 enters production this spring. Only 427 will be offered in the United States and Canada, with 78 more exported outside North America. That’s a total of 505 production vehicles – the same number of horsepower produced by the LS7 engine.

The special-edition Corvette carries a MSRP of $84,195 and includes the 3LZ premium equipment package with a custom, leather-wrapped interior. A navigation system is the only option ($1,750). As with other Corvette models, customer delivery is available at the Corvette Museum, in Bowling Green, Ky.

A breakdown of the 427 Limited Edition Z06’s unique content includes:

  • Crystal Red Tintcoat exterior paint with stinger-style graphics and 427 hood badges
  • Exclusive, new chrome wheels
  • Body-color rear spoiler and door handles
  • Exclusive dark titanium custom leather-wrapped interior
  • Special Crystal Red interior trim plate graphic pattern
  • Console armrest signed and numbered by Wil Cooksey
  • “427″-embroidered seats and floor mats
  • “Z06″ sill plates

The 427 Limited Edition Z06 joins the Indy 500 Pace Car replica – available in coupe and convertible configurations – as the second limited-production Corvette model introduced for 2008, giving enthusiasts and collectors a wealth of choices. In January, Chevrolet also announced the 2009 Corvette ZR1, which enters production later this summer.

“There’s never been a better time to be a Corvette enthusiast,” said Charles. “The performance and refinement are exemplary and special editions, like the 427 model, enrich the heritage of America’s sports car.”


Corvette Z06 details

The Corvette Z06 that is the foundation for the 427 Limited Edition offers carefully executed levels of capability and technology, making it one of the best performance values on the market.

The Z06’s LS7 7.0L engine reintroduced the 427-cubic-inch engine to the Corvette lineup. It uses racing-derived lightweight technology, including titanium connecting rods and intake valves, to help boost horsepower and rpm capability – it is rated at 505 horsepower (377 kW).* The only transmission offered with the Z06 is a six-speed manual.

In the car’s 3,162-pound (1,437 kg) package, the LS7 engine helps deliver 0-60 mph performance of 3.7 seconds in first gear, quarter-mile times of 11.7 seconds at 125 mph and a top speed of 198 mph (as recorded on Germany’s Autobahn) – the Z06 also circuited Germany’s famed N ü rburgring racetrack in a time of 7:43.

The Z06 has a unique aluminum body structure for optimum stiffness and light weight for the fixed-roof body style. Perimeter rails are one-piece hydroformed aluminum members featuring cast suspension nodes, which replace many welded steel components on other Corvette models. Advanced structural composites featuring carbon fiber are bonded to the aluminum structure. Wider front wheelhouses, for example, are carbon composites and the passenger compartment floors combine carbon-fiber skins with an ultra-lightweight balsa wood core.

A firm, race-proven suspension works harmoniously with large 18 x 9.5-inch cast-spun aluminum wheels and 275/35ZR18 tires in the front, and 19 x 12-inch cast-spun aluminum wheels with 325/30ZR19 tires in the rear to achieve lateral acceleration of more than 1 g. Complementing the suspension system and large rolling stock is an equally capable four-wheel disc brake system, consisting of 14-inch (355 mm) vented and cross-drilled front rotors and 13.4-inch (340 mm) vented and cross-drilled rear rotors.

The front rotors are acted upon by large, red-painted six-piston calipers that use six individual brake pads. Individual brake pads are used because they deliver more equalized wear compared to what would otherwise be a pair of very long single-piece pads. For the rear brakes, four-piston calipers with four individual brake pads are used. A Delphi four-channel ABS system is standard, as is a very competent active handling system – complete with a Competitive Driving mode.


History of the Corvette and the 427 engine

The Chevrolet Mark IV V-8 debuted in the Corvette in 1965 and was dubbed the big-block, because it was physically larger in all respects than Chevy’s other V-8 engine, which became known as the small-block. In ’65, the big-block was offered in a 396-cubic-inch displacement, with a maximum rating of 425 gross horsepower (317 kW). In 1966, the big-block received larger cylinder bores and grew to its legendary 427-cubic-inch form. It came in two power levels: 390 hp (291 kW) and 425 hp.

By 1967, the Corvette’s 427 engine was a legend in its own time and was offered with a unique induction system that featured an inline trio of two-barrel carburetors. Known as the “L71″ (its order code), it was characterized by a large, chrome triangular air cleaner assembly. It was rated at 435 gross horsepower (324 kW). The ’67 big-block Corvettes were easily distinguished from their small-block brethren by a raised “stinger” hood.

A handful of Corvettes with the “L88″-code 427 engine slipped out of the factory in 1967, each rated at 430 horsepower (321 kW), but the L88 would be more closely associated with the redesigned 1968 and ’69 models. The L88 breathed through a single four-barrel carburetor rather than the L71’s three two-barrels. The triple-carburetor induction system was still available, however, as the Corvette was offered with both the L88 and L71 versions of the 427.

No less than six versions of the engine were offered in 1969, the final year for the 427. They included the L88, the L71 and a very rare ZL1 427 that was built with a lightweight aluminum cylinder block. Only two regular-production Corvettes were built with the ZL1 engine, putting them on the short list of the most collectible Corvettes in history.

The big-block increased in size to 454 cubic inches in 1970, and the original big-block engine family exited the Corvette lineup after the 1974 model year. The 2008 Corvette Z06’s LS7 engine offers big-block displacement and horsepower, but in a more efficient small-block architecture.

GM Announces Production Dates for 2008/2009 Corvettes

GM has released to dealers the following dates regarding the end of production for 2008 Corvettes as well as the beginning of production for the 2009 model year:

The 2008 model year for Corvette will come to a close on June 20th with the sold order cut-off date set for April 25th. These dates are for all body styles: Coupe, Convertible and Z06. If you’re still looking to place an order for a 2008 Corvette, you better get moving now.

More exciting is the dates for production of the 2009 model year Corvette. For Coupe, Convertible and Z06 Corvettes, the startup date for production is planned for June 23rd. ZR1 Corvette production is expected to start three weeks later on July 14th.

What’s interesting about the 2009 model is how little we know about any changes in the works. We do know about two new colors: Cyber Gray and rumored new “blade” silver. We also have hints that a 2009 wheel will make its debut early on the Z44 “427″ Edition Z06. It could just be that after the mid cycle upgrades presented on the 2008 Corvette, the only changes in store for 2009 are paint and wheels.

The four models will be introduced to the Corvette public at the National Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash in April.

Corvette Values: 1966 Convertible Project Car

1966 Corvette Convertible Project Car

One of the most frequent questions we are asked is about the pricing of project Corvettes. These are cars defined as non-running and in many cases they may contain damage and rust to the body and frame. Placing a valuation on a project car is done for the most part just as you would do a running Corvette: determining the condition, options and documentation. However, emphasis should be placed on the condition of the Corvette as well as surveying the car’s current components and determining what, if any parts may be missing. And of course the question you should always ask whether the Corvette is a project or NCRS Top Flight is about documentation, because a project car with documentation will always be more valuable than one without.

Having said that, we were contacted by KR in Kansas who inquired about the value of his 1966 Corvette Convertible that hasn’t run in over 15 years.

1966 Corvette Convertible, VIN 194676S113XXX. Nassau Blue with black vinyl interior. 4-speed transmission. The Corvette has a replacement, non matching numbers 327-300 hp block with the original engines heads, intake and carburetor. 61,553 miles are shown on the car. The engine hasn’t run since 1993. The body has several problem areas. Clock is missing but most other parts are either still on the car or stored with it. No documentation.

The VIN # indicates it was built in February 1966, midway through the production year. The mileage of 61,553 is stated as correct by the owner of the vehicle.

This 1966 Roadster is Nassau Blue in color and the paint can be considered as being “marginal.” The fiberglass body panels need minor repair in several areas, however, they have not been modified.

The frame of the Corvette has surface rust partially due to not being driven and sitting in a non-heated storage facility since 1979.

The bumpers and wheel covers are original, but not on the vehicle. The tires definitely need replacing.

This Corvette Roadster is powered by a non-original 327-300 motor. The original motor threw a rod through the side of the block. The replacement motor has the original heads, intake manifold and carburetor from the original motor. The original radiator was removed but is available. The engine has not been run since 1993. It is coupled with a 4-speed manual transmission with the correct shifter.

The interior of this 1966 Roadster is the standard Black vinyl. The instrument panel is missing the clock and will require minor repairs. The door panels and seats can be considered in acceptable condition.

This 1966 Corvette Roadster has the optional removable hardtop that is in place.

Bottom Line: The Corvette will take a considerable amount of work to become roadworthy. In addition to the motor not running and the radiator not being in place, the brakes will need to be completely redone as well as the electricals.

As this 1966 Corvette Roadster sits today, we place a value of $20,000 on it. In today’s market, one in average condition will command a price in the mid-forty’s.

1970 LT-1 Corvette Convertible

Mecum’s High Performance Auction came to Kissimmee in January and put on a great auction despite an occasional shower or two on Saturday. The three day auction racked up $15 million in total car sales with Corvettes bringing in just under $4.5 million. Of the 162 Corvettes offered, 102 changed hands giving the Kissimmee auction a 63.3% sales percentage for Corvette.

The top selling Corvette was the #112 1953 Corvette I documented in this auction video. The first-year Corvette was sold to Proteam for $249,900. A Silver/Black 1967 Corvette Convertible with a L71 427 ci 435 hp engine was second on the Corvette sales list with a selling price of $188,000. This Corvette featured Silver Pearl paint with black interior and a black stinger hood. The Corvette is documented with its original tank sticker, Corvette Owner’s Manual, Owner Protection Plan booklet and has a Bloomington Gold Certificate and two Top Flights Awards from the NCRS.

One of my favorite Corvettes that made the sold column (and is pictured above) was a 1970 LT1 Convertible with just 9,174 original miles. The Corvette was purchased new in 1970 by Jose Ramirez. Jose seldom drove it and stopped driving the Corvette altogether in 1979 because it wasn’t running properly. In 2006 it was discovered that the plug wires had been installed incorrectly. The Corvette sat in his driveway from 1979 until 1992. At some point, a tree limb fell on the nose damaging both headlight doors. The city of Galesburg, IL requested Jose move the car due to their derelict auto ordinance. When he did not, the city had the Corvette towed (the tow trick driver had to use a chainsaw to free the Vette from the tree limb). Jose then chose to pay $200 per month for the next 14 years to have it stored indoors. It was untouched there until he passed away in 2006. The car was sold to Proteam Corvette for $72,450.

NCM Auctioning Unique Zora Collectible Hot Wheel Corvette

Zora Hot Wheels CollectibleThe National Corvette Museum’s eBay auctions are a great way to donate well-needed funds to the museum while getting the parts you need for your Corvette, but occasionally they throw a neat collectible up there as is the case this week. For those of you into collecting die-casts and miniature Corvettes, the NCM is offering a Hot Wheels Hall of Fame Legends Corvette that was created as part of the commemorative 35th anniversary series. The Hot Wheels 1:64 model appears to be a 1956 SR-2 with its signature fin. The packaging shows Corvette’s first chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov and is autographed by his wife Elfi Arkus-Duntov.

At the writing of this post, the current bid is $53.50. The auction closes on February 13th and the proceeds go to support the National Corvette Museum.

2008 Corvette Convertible

It’s awards season again and no I’m not talking about the Oscars. Intellichoice crunched the numbers once again and Chevrolet scored three out of eight categories. Winning the category of Best Car Value over $24,000 was the 2008 Corvette Convertible. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Extended Cab 4WD won Best Truck Value over $27,000 and the Chevrolet Express 1500 won the Best Van Value over $25,000. The Toyota Prius won the Best Car Value under $24,000.

The Best Overall Value of the Year awards are given to those vehicles that deliver outstanding value and lower than expected costs. Intellichoice evaluates what it costs to own and operate a vehicle over time and category winners are recognized for their lower cost of ownership compared to other competitive models in the same class.

The 2008 Corvette Convertible was also named as Best Overall Value in the Sport class. Check out the full list at Intellichoice.com
