Preview of the 2014 Bloomington Gold Corvette Show

Don’t look now, but it’s already the last weekend in June! To us Corvette folks that means one thing – it’s time for another installment of Bloomington Gold. The 42nd annual Bloomington Gold Corvette Show takes place this Friday, June 27th through Sunday the 29th. 2014 marks the second year on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign.

The show layout has been tweaked for 2014 due to construction at Assembly Hall. What was mainly parking last year is now show space this year. Based on Bloomington’s show map there still looks to be plenty of grass and shade to go around once again.

Things kick off on Friday with the GoldSchool. For $100 attendees can sit in on all seminars with topics ranging from the Bowling Green assembly process to the early history of Corvette racing to the NCM sinkhole. Instructors include former racer Tony DeLorenzo, Corvette Nation’s Bill Stephens, and historian Al Grenning among others.

Of course the marquee events of the 42nd annual show include the Gold, Survivor, and Benchmark judging taking place on Saturday and Sunday. 2014 will be the first year for the new Gold, Silver, and Bronze categories within the Survivor judging.

Various vendors and aftermarket suppliers will be selling their wares throughout the weekend while Corvettes of all years will be taunting potential new owners over in the GoldMine. The annual GoldTour will stage at 5pm on Saturday before heading off into the countryside. This year there’s a Party in the Park beginning when the GoldTour returns to the U of I campus. The dinner and subsequent party is just $20 and the GoldTour is free.

If you need even more time behind the wheel be sure to head over to the GoldAutocross on Saturday or Sunday and test your skills on the sinuous race course. There’s also the Chevrolet ride and drive if you want to test drive some of GM’s other vehicles. Finally, The Great Hall’s final year will be set up over in the I-Hotel all weekend.

This will be the first year in many, many years without an auction at Bloomington after Mecum canceled their 2014 sale. If you’re looking to buy a Corvette this weekend, don’t fret. You can still shop around at one of the Corvette dealers or swing through the GoldMine to find your next dream ride.
