The results are in for the 2009 Barrett-Jackson and GM was officially declared the winner for bringing a number of prototypes and engineering Corvettes to the Scottsdale auction, particularly the C4 ZR-1s. In fact, while we believe that many of the Corvettes that sold last week were exceptional cars, because its Barrett-Jackson, we also expect the memorable. Without GM’s Heritage Collection, this would have been just another auction.
2009 Barrett-Jackson Corvette Auction Results
Of course we remember last year’s star attraction, the 2009 Corvette ZR1 that sold for $1 million. Who would have predicted that 2009’s star Corvette attraction would be the ZR-1s from the C4 Corvette era.
The GM Heritage Collection stole the show with three Corvette ZR-1’s ranking in the top five of Corvette sales. The top seller of all Corvettes was the $286,000 paid for a 1989 DR-1 Corvette, a Convertible ZR-1 prototype. A 1989 Corvette ZR-1 press car sold for $198,000. Rick Hendrick purchased the 1989 Corvette ZR-1 “Snake Skinner” for $176,000, and the 1990 “Active” Corvette ZR-1 sold for $150,000.
Following a popular trend in recent years, there were several C4/C6 ZR1 combo deals offered. These pairings were packaged more for convenience than collectability. A 1990 Corvette ZR-1/2009 Corvette ZR1 sold for $203,500 while another featured a 1993 40th Anniversary Corvette ZR-1 paired with a 2009 Cyber Gray Corvette ZR1 Coupe that sold for $198,200. Interestingly, both the C4 Corvette’s catalog description said they were owned by Dave Ressler, the Chevrolet dealer that paid $1,000,000 for the first retail 2009 Corvette ZR1.
But not all Corvettes at Barrett-Jackson this year were GM Heritage cars or ZR-1s. The second highest price for a Corvette was $220,000 set by a highly documented 1959 Corvette Roadster featuring a 283/245 dual quad V8 and was 1 of 888 painted in Crown Sapphire. This Corvette has appeared in the Bloomington Gold Special Collection three times, awarded an NCRS Duntov, multiple top flights and is a Bloomington Gold Survivor.
