RM Auctions featured several rare Corvettes for sale at the Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction held August 19th and 20th. The Corvettes included an ultra rare 1963 Corvette Z06 Convertible, a 1969 Baldwin Motion III and a 1968 L89 Corvette race car.
The 1963 Corvette Z06 Convertible was a no-sale at a high bid of $625,000. This Corvette is currently the only documented 1963 Convertible ordered with the Z06 RPO package, usually ordered by those whose Corvettes were destined for the race track. Until now, when this documented example was discovered, most Corvette historians had agreed that a convertible edition of the Z06 did not exist. The convertible was expected to go for $650,000 – $950,000.
The 1969 Baldwin Motion Phase III Corvette sold for $198,000 which was lower than the $250,000-$350,000 estimate. The Phase III featured the original 482 cu. in. ZL/X “Elephant†motor (the only documented one known to exist) that was given the speed guarantee of 11.5 seconds in the quarter mile. It also carries a second guarantee offered by Motion; with the extremely rare Hone overdrive installed this car was given a guarantee to cruise at 120mph with the overdrive engaged.
Another well-known racer was also sold at the RM Auction. A 1968 Corvette L89 sold for $110,000. This 500 hp Corvette raced in England for only one season and then was lost for 30 years until rediscovered.
Several other Corvettes were also sold at the auction. Two 1957 Fuel Injected Corvettes sold for $82,500 and $132,000, a 1961 Custom Corvette sold for $82,500 and a 1991 ZR1 Coupe sold for $23,100.
