Proving that the mid-engine C8 Corvette is the gift that keeps on giving, we were quite happy to see a group of Corvette engineers driving the upcoming 2025 Corvette ZR1 prototypes yesterday. The group of cars were spied by our photographers as they were entering GM’s Company Vehicle Operations Center in Warren, Michigan.

As the ZR1 prototypes were captured by two different spy photographers, we wanted to bring you that second set today which not only shows one of the high wing camouflaged ZR1s, but the cars that its being benchmarked against.

One of the photos taken by Brian Willaims shows a Porsche 911 GT2 RS entering the GM facility with two Z06s in tow. The silver 911 GT2 RS is a rear-wheel drive model powered by a turbocharged 3.8L 6-cylinder rated at 690-hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. In June 2021, a 911 GT2 RS MR lapped the Nurburgring in 6:38.835 so we can see why it would be a natural to benchmark the C8 ZR1 against.

We also see two Z06s and so we assume the big wing car has the Z07 Performance Package while the other appears to be a base Z06 model.

In addition to the Porsche and two Z06s, AutoBlog reported that a Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing was also driving with the group. Going back to yesterday’s photos, we found the photo of that car leading the ZR1 group once inside the GM facility. The Blackwing has a supercharged 6.2L V8 that makes 668 horsepower and 659 lb-ft of torque.

We asked yesterday what we thought we were seeing and the only real differences between the prototype ZR1s and the production Z06s other than the hidden wheels appears to be the front fascia. That would make sense as it would give enthusiasts a way to spot the ZR1 coming at the them and give some additional visual references between the Z06 and ZR1. We are wondering if designers had pulled some ideas from the C7 ZR1’s front fascia which differentiated the ZR1 from the Z06.

  1. GM needs to offer a forced induction v8 option for C8, at the same price point as our C7 ZO6s that we want to replace. It’s not fair to force us to pay ZR1 money, to replace our C7 ZO6s. Many of us don’t want to be beta testers for a over complicated, high rpm, high risk race motor LT6 to replace our LT4. The C8 ZO6 should have just received a LT5 with the same $85k MSRP as the CT5 Blackwing.

  2. For a “cheaper” Z06 powered C8 Stingray, you need to contact Callaway for a supercharger conversion. I would not expect it from Chevy.
