Chevrolet’s all-new 2023 Corvette Z06 is so close to becoming a reality, and today we got another important piece of news needed for the high-performance Corvette to officially go on sale.

We learned today that the EPA has wrapped up fuel economy testing of the new 2023 Corvette Z06 with its bespoke 670-hp naturally aspirated LT6 motor. While we don’t yet have the actual fueleconomy.gov’s highway, city, and combined ratings, we do know how much the gas guzzler tax will be. All buyers purchasing the 2023 Corvette Z06 will start with the GG tax of $2,600 for the base model, and if you add the T0F/T0G Carbon Fiber aero (which is required for the Z07 performance package), the gas guzzler tax goes up to $3,000.

It’s the carbon aero package that triggers the pricing level of the gas guzzler tax and so it must be the huge amount of drag on the car with the high wing installed on the rear deck and the dive planes on the front corners.

Since 1978. the EPA has attempted to discourage buyers from the purchase of “fuel-inefficient vehicles” by assigning a gas guzzler tax, and today all vehicles with a combined MPG of less than 22.5 are subject to the tax.

Certain performance models of the Corvette have shown up on the EPA’s gas guzzler list over the years, starting first with the supercharged 638-hp 2009 Corvette ZR1. The C7 Corvette Z06 first made the list in 2015 but only for the automatic transmission models. The most recent Corvette to be assigned a gas guzzler tax was the supercharged 770-hp 2019 Corvette ZR1 which added $2,100 to MSRP.

We have an email into our friends at Chevrolet and will provide any statements and other fuel economy numbers as they come our way.

  1. I guess the GG tax will be passed along by the flippers to those buying in the secondary market.

  2. Except the EPA doesn’t discourage buying inefficient vehicles because the most popular type of vehicle, SUVs, are exempt from gas guzzler taxes. My wife’s Jeep Grand Cherokee got about 14 mpg around town compared to my Z06’s 19 mpg, was driven twice as far in the same period if time, sold approximately 27x more units between 2015 and 2019 than C7 Z06’s, and was exempt from the gas guzzler tax under a provision meant to exempt farm trucks.

gg EPA and congress. As usually, focusing on the most impactful things.
