You didn’t think we would get to Laguna Seca without another Balance of Performance update, did you? Chevrolet’s Corvette C8.R has come alive the last two races and has taken the points lead in GTD-Pro following its win at Sebring and a third-place finish at Long Beach. Race organizers are now attempting to put the genie back in the bottle with the latest update as we can’t have that damn Corvette coming into the class with a waiver and winning everything!

IMSA released the new Balance of Performance updates this week and the C8.R will gain 20kg in weight for a total of 55kg now in the C8.Rs ballast box. The other listed change shows a “10mm Rear Wing Gurney Required.”

BMW also saw its power reduced via a reduction of its maximum RPM and a decrease of its turbo boost levels across the board. They will also have 1 less liter of fuel for a total of 97 liters on board.

You can see the current Balance of Performance Updates for the class here or check them out for all classes at IMSA.com:

Believe it or not, Laguna Seca is just the 4th race for the 2022 season and we’ve already had six BoP updates affecting the Corvette that we’ve counted so far for the season.

We learned about the Balance of Performance updates via IMSA’s twitter feed in which they ask if we are Team @CorvetteRacing or @BMWMotorsport. You can imagine how that non-scientific poll is going with Team @CorvetteRacing getting most of the kudos. Although as one commenter suggested, let’s ask Driver Nicky Catsburg who drives for both teams.

  1. Here we go again. I guess IMSA can’t stand to see USA Corvette Racing beat all that Jap crap & European crap. This is ridiculous, I think this is the 3rd or 4th weight add on penalty along with all the others (air restrictor reduced, less fuel, etc.)

  2. IMSA is following it’s owner NASCAR’s way of giving everyone a participation trophy. What happened to run what you brung

  3. That’s like adding another 10lbs to Secretariat. Hell, it finished 3rd at Long Beach. It’s not like it’s winning every race by a wide margin. What is the point in engineering a winning car following the existing rules at the beginning is the season only to change them to handicap that team

  4. What a great race package that GM has put together.
IMSA is trying every trick in the book to try and make the the field more competitive.
I guess if Chevrolet wins every race, no one would support the series.
Great job guys, you will figure it out and they will make you have more changes,
Possibly make you tow a trailer!

  5. Not blindfolded,NO steering wheel!! I’m 71 and remember REAL racing back in the 60s. Run what ya bring, and if you lose, come back with something quicker. This garbage isn’t real racing,it’s the way drivers get hurt or dead.

  6. If i would create a racing series to encourage R&D for each manufacturer and sub contractor, the rules would be simple: identical fuel capacity, dry weight and min ground clearance. Next it Would also require a hybrid powertrain (KERS)…
