[VIDEO] Man Cries as His Original-Owner 1963 Corvette Split Window is Sold at Barrett-Jackson

Following the conclusion of the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction, the social media peeps at the auction house are going through the broadcast and have been sharing videos of the more memorable sales that took place during the 50th Anniversary celebration. One such video was uploaded on Tuesday evening and by the end of it, I was crying just as hard as the seller.

The auction features a 1963 Corvette Split-Window Coupe offered for sale by the car’s original owner. The description from Barrett-Jackson says it all:

Sometimes it’s easy to forget the vehicles on the block are more than just fiberglass and sheet metal. They represent the memories and stories we cherish, and that’s part of the passion that moves this hobby forward.

The Red/Black Split-Window Coupe was purchased new and used as a family car during its early years but was then sold as the owner joined the Army. In 1983 he rediscovered the car in Cincinnati and bought it back. A full restoration was completed and the car was certified at Bloomington Gold. After years of showing the car up and down the East Coast and Midwest, the car was retired from the show circuit and enjoyed by the owners who continued to keep the car in great condition all this time.

For many longtime Corvette owners, the purchase and care of a vehicle over a lifetime, and all the memories that are generated and cherished, transforms the relationship between man and machine to be so much more. These cars become part of the family and letting go can be very difficult indeed.

For this owner whose first name is Fred, his last drive in the car that means everything to him was at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale as he and his wife guided the gleaming ’63 split-window onto the auction block. The couple exited the car and stood along the back wall, and as soon as the bids started coming in, the man breaks down and begins sobbing.

In the end, whether it’s kids, pets, or vintage Corvettes, we are just caretakers in their lives and at some point, everyone has to move on. While this auction generated $350,000 ($385K with buyers commission) for the original 327/340 sport coupe, saying goodbye is never easy. But then we see the excitement from the ’63 Corvette’s new owner as the circle of ownership starts again and we hope that this car will be enjoyed with the same amount of passion and dedication that the original owner provided over all these years.

  1. Unless he needed the money I wonder why he sold it? maybe no one in the family wanted it? when I talked about selling our 67 that has been with us for 34 years my wife said no way it would be like getting rid of one of our children.

  2. I cannot imagine in my wildest dreams selling a Corvette I bought new that many years ago. A little over a year ago, I sold a 2004 convertible which I ordered and bought new. So, I had it for 16 years and it absolutely killed me as I watched that car leave my driveway and head to its new home.

  3. You’re exactly right Jose, after 7 years of ownership, I sold my ’63 SWC in 1977 as we needed a down payment on our first house. Here, 45 years later, I still get sad thinking about that car.

  4. Dale

Mine will go up for sale when my cold dead hands come off the wheel 🙂

  6. I never thought I’d have one but I’ve had a 85-87 and currently I have a 2004 convertible I love them

  7. This guy knew he was getting a small fortune for his car. The money meant more than the car. 350 K is a lot of money..

  8. Damn nice car, but it seems to me that BJ is a ripp off place to sell a car. 35k to them for selling it? Wow, and people complain about local dealers being crooks??
