GM has already said its future will be all-electric combining a strategy of zero emissions, zero crashes, and zero congestion.

In fact, the company has promised to bring at least 20 new electric vehicles to market by 2023, and tonight at 7 p.m. ET, Cadillac’s first entrant into the luxury EV market – the Lyriq SUV – will be revealed.

Such a corporate philosophy likely means that an electric mid-engine Corvette is in the works.

In fact, such speculation has been rampant ever since December 2015 when GM first filed a trademark for the name “E-Ray.”

That trademark was going to expire Aug. 1 if GM did not renew it. Now comes word that GM has indeed refiled to trademark the name again with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

General Motors Moves to Renew the 'E-Ray' Trademark

Now that doesn’t necessarily mean the company will ever follow through by using the name, but it only makes sense that an electrified version of the Corvette, if ever produced, would be known as the “E-Ray,” doesn’t it?

Since Tadge Juechter and his crew never comment on future products, we’ll just have to wait a few more years to find out for sure.

While some people think a Corvette without a big V8 gas-powered engine would be sacrilegious, they said the same thing about the mid-engine Stingray. And we all know how that turned out, don’t we? Personally, we’re inclined to believe an electric version would make a neat addition to an expanded lineup of Corvettes, especially if it delivers even-faster times from 0 to 60. Of course, not hearing that rumble would definitely take some getting used to, wouldn’t it?

What do you think? Would you want an electric Corvette in your garage?

  1. I wouldn’t mind seeing an electric / gas hybrid. I think it was mentioned that the way the C8 was designed, there was a place for electric motors driving the front wheels. I would be one way of adding more total horsepower to the car, without stressing the gas engine to higher and higher power levels. As for all electric…that doesn’t sound like the way I would want it to go

You still can’t beat the sound of a Chevy V-8, that’s part of the total experience of driving a Corvette. A big piece of “at one with the car” was lost, when we lost our manual transmissions, the electric would just be another step in separating the car from the driver’s input…trying to eliminate and isolate the driver input, skills and responsibility from the car, as much as possible.

  2. The Sound, that’s what I’d miss. There is nothing as sweet, for this old Souls than the sound of a big-block Corvette starting up. No matter how fast the E-Ray is, the Sound is missing

  3. NO ELECTRIC CORVETTES . missing the point. motor makes the car. JAGUAR XKE makes beautiful sounds and they electrified one that PRINCE HARRY drove at his wedding.SHOCKING!!!!!!!!!!
went to GREENWICH CT. CONCOURS , had a vendor there that was offering E-CORVETTE swaps,!!!!! yeah, toss my V8 for a plug in. does E VEtte have a V8 soundtrack you can play?

  4. I’m very sure that a couple of “electrified” C8s are rooming around the Milford proving grounds as I have encountered a couple on the roads here in Mi. One is camo wrapped the other Black. They don’t have that distinctive V8 sound as they are moving. They are rather silent. You see them but can’t hear them. E-Ray, I’m sure they are in the near future!!!

  5. Dear GM Authority and Loyal commenters. I agree with all of you above on this e-Ray. EV Stingray, etc.

Now, I hereby trademark, develop a presentation of my intellectual property; copyright and come up with the following slogans: “If the Stingray’ll sting ya, the Eray will electacute ya!”
and, “If the Stingray stung ’em, the E-ray will electrocute ’em; and if the Stingray stung you, the E-Ray will electrify you.” AF

  6. electric car they only move the polution from the customer to the builder we still have a long time to go for it to be good but we must do it because with time it will be much better

  7. Play back the sound of the Last ZR1 they built on the 14 speaker Bose and pump up the volume and they Won’t even know the E-Ray is all electric!. The closest thing to the E- Ray now is that One of 1400 HP Mustang Mach-E commercial Car and the R&D on that thing cost more then the price difference between the C8 and a New Ford GT! The E-Ray will still be allot more bang for your buck and a real person will still be able to buy one! This is day Three for my new Stingray!!!

  8. This will be the day the music died. Electric cars should have their on names. Do not destroy the history of America’s sports car with laptop batteries.
