GM to Reopen 2020 Corvette Ordering in December and Kills Planned Production Ramp-Up Schedule


We finally got some good news regarding the ordering and production of the 2020 Corvette Stingray via our friends at Kerbeck Corvette in Atlantic City. Here’s the latest info on constraints, dealer ordering and even some more good news regarding the ordering of the 2020 Corvette Stingray Convertible.

Before the start of the strike, Chevrolet was expected to open the ordering process is September (which they did) and then there would be one order submission period per month from September through December. After orders were submitted in September, the strike happened and then everything was put into limbo. Now that the strike is over, Chevrolet has shifted the start of production to February 2020 and has been working internally to gear up for that start.

During the original planning period, Chevrolet was going to start C8 production in December and then gradually ramp up the build process by first starting with a core set of colors and equipment options and then each month another couple of colors and more equipment/options would be added. Our understanding is that’s no longer the case.

Chevrolet had previously canceled the October’s order submissions due to the strike, and now November’s C8 order submissions have been canceled as well. December will now feature two C8 Corvette order submission periods with dealers allowed to submit any color, option or trim group available on the 2020 Corvette Stingray Coupe.

That’s right! Once the order submissions start happening in December, there will be no expected constraints on colors, trim packages or equipment items as was originally expected. That’s way more fair for the potential buyers who put their names on a list long ago only to see the spots slide because Chevrolet wasn’t going to build their cars until week 10, 11 or 12.

2020 Corvette Stingray Ordering

We also received official confirmation today that ordering for the 2020 Corvette Stingray Convertible will open in January 2020. Chevrolet will not have a separate allocation group for the new model and dealers will not receive separate earned allocation numbers. What this means is that dealers will have to work in the convertible orders to their existing allocation numbers.

Although not yet confirmed, we believe that production of the 2020 Convertible Stingrays will begin in mid-to-late April or early May at the soonest.

2020 Corvette Accessories

Chevrolet is still on track to get the majority of its accessories ready for the car. They provided dealers a list of options that will be available for order by the end of this year, as well as the list of options that will be available in the first or second quarter of 2020. If an accessory or item isn’t listed below, then it’s all ready to go now.

Acccessories Available Q4 2019 are:

  • 5W8 – Ground Effects Kit in Carbon Fiber Painted Carbon Flash (includes rockers and front splitter)
  • SJI – Grille Insert in Visible Carbon FiberRZ9 Rocker Panel Extensions in Carbon Fiber Painted Carbon Flash Metallic
  • S6S – Rocker Panel Extensions in Visible Carbon Fiber
  • 5JR – Mirror Caps in Visible Carbon Fiber
  • VTB – Fascia Protector
  • VYW – Premium Floor Mats
  • RWU – Cargo Organizer

Accessories Available Q1/Q2 2020 are:

  • RCC – Red Engine Cover
  • RCD – Silver Engine Cover
  • 5V7 – Ground Effects Kit, Black (includes rockers and front splitter)
  • VST – Illuminated Sill Plate
  • RIK/RIN/SL8 – Corvette Rear Script Emblem (in Arctic White, Elkhart Blue, and Torch Red)

  1. When the BMW 2015 M4 was announced in April 2014 cars were available for ordering. I ordered my car, could track the build and took delivery in July 2014. No hype just German efficiency. I ordered my C8 when dealer received allocation, bet I don’t see my car until June? Yes, you get what you pay for…..

  2. How can you call it a 2020 Vette. When build is starting when most auto makers are getting ready to end 2020 builds and getting ready for 2021 builds. By June lots of 2021 builds are on line getting ready for full switch over to 2021 builds. Worked in a auto factory for 20 years. Just admit the 2020 vette build is all messed up from the strike and probably be full of ppu. Which means problems per unit. Wouldn’t own a 2020 vette ever.

  3. Production will start in early December for saleable cars. My source works at the plant.

  4. I don’t have the exact count, but I thought I heard that they will be building about 250 C8s in December/January that will serve as CFT and marketing cars. I believe their original ramp-up plan of introducing colors and options will be applied to those cars.

  5. Ya know some of us have had to put up $1K for some time now and have waited pertinently thru the strike and finishing the 2019 orders and other production delays. I think that GM should compensate us in some way. Like maybe a wheel upgrade or some sort of accessory discount on say one item or some thing. Just Saying.

  6. I PUT A 3,000 DEPOSIT ON A C8 AUGUST 5. ALSO I HAVE A 37,000 CREDIT TOWARDS MY C8 AFTER TRADING IN MY C7. MY DEALER IS SITTING ON A 40,000 DEPOSIT. I HOPE THIS IS IN A INTEREST-BEARING ACOUNT.

  7. Let’s just hope that the lines aren’t rushed. Mistakes and QC items can get lost when the lines are running too hard.

  8. Having ordered a first run c7 in June of 2013 and received the car in early October 2013 , like all yr comments have mentioned, it is truely a Chevrolet roll out and a PR disaster .
    I too placed a deposit in July 2019 and am dealing with GM s take it or leave it customer service.
    Also am looking at the true competition a Porsche 911 !

  9. why blame GM as it was the union fault as they settled for what was offered before the strike. the strike was all about keeping the union members minds off of the corruption of the union bosses. people like me who ordered the first C-5s had the same problem.

I ordered a new C7 in July of 2016 the dealership didn’t have a allocation for the car to be built once allocation become available it took 18 and a half weeks the thing about this car I ordered it myself and was able to put what I wanted on it and that’s it nothing to do with something that I didn’t want I got the car after 18 and a half weeks and it was worth the wait and I would do it all over again
