CorvetteBlogger Visits Smokey's Dyno and Performance

After our visit to CORSA Performance last month we headed over to Smokey’s Dyno and Performance in nearby Akron, Ohio to check out their first class custom shop. Smokey’s is a full service tuning shop offering everything from ECM tunes to custom wheel and tire installation. They specialize in all makes and models but, of course, we were there to talk Corvettes.

Smokey’s Dyno and Performance is located on a quiet street just off I-77 in eastern Ohio. Their newly renovated 16,000 square foot “L” shaped facility is made up of a show room, the main shop area, the dyno room, and DaVinci Motor Group – a high end car dealership. Smokey’s and DaVinci can work together to connect a customer with a new car plus modify it all in one stop. Then the new owner can finance their new modded purchase in one place. The highly experienced team at Smokey’s consists of 8 employees led by owners Brandon Masidonski and Peter Zoumberakis. They operate 6 days per week.

Clients enter through the main entrance into the showroom. Displayed there are many of the accessories offered by Smokey’s. They are an authorized retailer for Giovanna, Cobb, BMC, and other top aftermarket accessory manufacturers. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, just ask the team there and they can probably get what you want. The customer waiting area is located toward the back of the show room with its leather recliners and flat screen TV (which was showing BBC Top Gear while we were there). One of the coolest features at Smokey’s is the opportunity to watch your car get worked on via webcam. We know a lot of you don’t want to let your car out of your sight and this is a great alternative to standing around in the shop bays while your car gets upgraded.

The shop area consists of 4 Rotary 2-post lifts, a tire mounting/balancing area, and virtually every automotive tool you can think of. Each lift fits neatly into a custom cove cut into the ceiling of building.

The area itself is orderly and clean. There’s no grease or other fluids on the gray painted floor. Parts removed from clients’ cars are stored neatly out of the way throughout the room. Air hoses and electrical cords hang from above to keep the floors tidy. Plenty of fluorescent lights keep all of their projects illuminated while white painted walls evoke visions of a hospital operating room.

All the magic happens over in the dyno room. There, a Superflow AutoDyn – 880E AWD Dynamometer is ready to put your car to the test. Soon a second dyno will be added. Smokey’s reports all or their results using standard temperature and pressure (STP) in order to keep the data as consistent as possible. The results can be viewed at either the control console or on a large flat screen TV suspended from the ceiling.

Easily the coolest part about the dyno room is all of the windows. They not only let in tons of light but it also gives passers by the chance to see what car is currently throwing down some numbers. When dark out they’ve even had gawkers park out front along the road when the dyno is running. Like the rest of the facility, the dyno room is well organized and clean. Even the tie downs for the dyno are neatly laid out prior to and in between runs.

The Smokey’s team typically can accommodate 2-3 dyno runs per day. Your power and torque numbers are reported in Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP) are made available .pdf form.

Smokey’s also specializes in custom ECU tunes for virtually all makes of car. You can see their Corvette offerings here.

So if you’re looking to add some more cowbell to you Corvette, be sure to contact the folks over at Smokey’s Dyno and Performance and don’t forget to checkout their wicked twin turbo C7. They can hook you up with whatever you’re looking for.

You can check them out online at www.smokeysdyno.com, on Facebook, or Twitter. Additionally you can use the ole telephone and dial them up at 330-644-0021 or shoot them an email at [email protected].

We want thank Brandon, Tim, Connor, and the rest of the team at Smokey’s for hosting us last week and also for their assistance on our Operation Air Flow project. Before you head over to their shop enjoy a few more randoms from our day at Smokey’s below.
