Some of us like to collect cars and others like to collect stamps. And if you like both you are probably ecstatic over the United States Postal Service recognizing muscle cars and Mecum’s venerated Indy Auction with commemorative stamps. Mecum’s annual Spring Indianapolis Auction has been recognized around the world as not only the original muscle car auction but one of the largest. This year will be Dana Mecum’s 26th Original Spring Classic and with the emphasis on muscle cars is the perfect place for the U.S. Postal Service to highlight its five new limited edition stamps featuring iconic muscle cars. The stamps will be featured on display and be available for purchase during the Indianapolis auction which runs now through Sunday, May 19th.
The United States Postal Service will honor American muscle cars at the Spring Classic event with two stations where the stamp collections will be featured. They will be offered in everything from uncut press sheets for framing to envelopes with affixed prints. The USPS stamps fill feature six of the most spectacular muscle cars from period: the 1966 Pontiac GTO, the 1967 Shelby GT500, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, the 1970 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda and the 1970 Chevelle SS. As is typical for Dana Mecum’s Indy auction he will have several examples of the real thing in his 2000 lot auction.
“The Muscle Cars stamps celebrate an exciting era in American automotive history,” said Greater Indiana District Manager Bernice Grant. “Typically equipped with big, powerful engines, these high-performance vehicles first roared onto our roads in the 1960s.”
The Muscle Cars Forever stamps are the third issuance in the America on the Move stamp series. The artwork was created by Tom Fritz of Newbury Park, Calif., under the art direction of Carl T. Herrman of North Las Vegas, Nev. The Muscle Cars stamps are being issued as Forever stamps in self-adhesive sheets of 20 (four of each design).
If you are a Corvette aficionado don’t despair about not being included in this particular USPS offering, Mecum has several fine examples of Corvettes crossing the block over the six day auction. But if you are a little light at the moment and don’t have the $125K to $600K dollars that the Saturday Corvettes are estimated to sell for, you might want to pick up a few muscle car stamps.
