The new GT2 Corvettes have exceeded all expectations in their GT2 debut at the Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio with Magnussen and O’Connell earning the first podium finish for Corvette Racing in the new class. For most of the race, the #3 Corvette ran second behind the #45 Flying Lizard Porsche while Gavin/Beretta was a solid third before dropping to 4th place with less than 5 minutes remaining.

There is some speculation that towards the end of the race the two Corvettes let up just a bit to avoid any performance restrictions that might come from the new cars finishing too strong in their first outing. As the goal for the team is preparation for the 2010 season, I wouldn’t put it past Fehan for employing that strategy.

The final podium in GT2 was Porsche, Corvette and BMW. Clearly this will be an exciting class to watch in the coming months.

We’ll have some quotes and reflections from the team and drivers as they become available.

NBC will televise the race tape-delayed at 2:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 9.
