It’s time for Throwback Thursday where we feature vintage photos of Corvettes. Here we have two beautiful icons from the 1960s. The first is obviously a 1969 Corvette Stingray with a wild custom paint job that makes us wish it was in color. And secondly, the mainstay of automotive events is Miss whatever-the-name-of-the-dragstrip.
Ever since I saw this photo a couple weeks back, I’ve been meaning to post it here. I always enjoy seeing old photos of Corvettes in their vintage settings, which for me harkins back to a somewhat more innocent time for America. So why not use the occasion to kick off a new weekly series of posts with vintage pictures of Corvettes!
This 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Convertible and the young lady sitting on the hood was captured at Weeki Wachee Springs in Florida.
A 1967 Corvette that has a special place in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans has been chosen to be the poster art for this year’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion poster.
That car is the 1967 Corvette No. 9 raced by Corvette legends Dick Guldstrand and Bob Bondurant at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it hit speeds of 170mph-plus down Mulsanne Straight to take a big lead before mechanical woes forced it off the track. Despite that disappointment, the two drivers had already become folk heroes to the locals by driving the car from the airport near Paris to the track.
What’s been called the “World’s Fastest Six Cylinder Corvette” will be crossing the block next weekend at Mecum’s annual Fall Premier auction in St. Charles, IL. This iconic drag racer beat up on the competition from 1962 – 1971 with Earl Britt behind the wheel. Britt operated Earl’s Pizza Palace in Sioux Falls, South Dakota when not setting ET records and winning multiple NHRA championships.
You might say two old friends will be celebrating a special anniversary later this month.
The second annual Corvette World Tribute is slated on Sunday, August 19 at Road America, where 60 years of Corvettes will be marked with a variety of special events.

One of my favorite features from Hemmings is the vintage photographs showing life in America from the view on the street. This photo shows downtown Long Beach, Washington in what is believed to be the summer or early fall of 1964 shows a crowded street with a Riverside Red mid-year Corvette driving away from the camera. In the ninth episode of Corvette Racing’s Track to Street series, enthusiasts and racers of today and yesterday come together to celebrate their common passion – the Corvette.
In 1971 Corvette racer and race car builder John Greenwood was approached by BF Goodrich tires to campaign two Corvettes competing on the company’s new Lifesaver Radial street tires. Three BFG Corvettes, wearing numbers 48, 49 and 50, were built for the campaign in FIA-sanctioned races including Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring. Featuring ZL-1 racing engines and the patriotic stars & stripes livery, the BFG Corvettes were an instant hit with the fans as Greenwood’s Corvettes were the loudest and proudest at the track. One of the BFG Corvettes, the #49 car, will be one of the featured cars for sale at RM Auction’s Monterey event in mid-August.
When one spends $1.25 million on a vintage Corvette that has won Top Flight, Bloomington Gold and most recently the Triple Diamond award, the last thing any sane person would do is turn it into a race car and take it to the race track. But that’s exactly what Pro Team Corvette president Terry Michaelis and collector Chuck Ungurean have planned to do with the Corvette they purchased last August at Mecum’s Monterey auction. And who better to drive the race-prepped Hanley Dawson Chevrolet Corvette in vintage ’67 livery than the original driver and Corvette Hall of Famer Tony DeLorenzo.
