Spy photographers have once again caught up with the 2014 C7 Corvette as it’s undergoing cold weather testing in Ontario, Canada. Instead of just pictures, we have video of what appears to be two C7 prototypes testing in the cold and one segment of tape actually captures the exhaust note coming from the engine.
It’s not often we dedicate a post about a vehicle that’s not a Corvette, but when we see another Bowtie running the Nordschleife, we take notice. Here is the official video of the new 2012 Camaro ZL1 running the Nurburgring in 7:41.27. Powered by a supercharged 6.2L “LSA” V8 rated at 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque, the new ZL1 was 40 seconds faster than the Camaro SS and 18 seconds faster than the Cadillac CTS-V’s 7:59. Earlier this year, the Corvette ZR1 ran a 7:19.63 while the Z06 clocked in at 7:22.68.
There is a reason that Chevy offers the FREE two day driving school for anyone who buys a new Corvette ZR1. With 638 supercharged horses, it can be a handful for the uninitiated. As a PSA for all new Corvette ZR1 drivers on why its important to take advantage of the school, check out this video after the jump. Fair warning though, the dudes in the Chrysler are very unimpressed with the driver of the ZR1 and both let a few choice words fly.
The ALMS has the week off, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have some great racing footage to share with you. Corvette Racing’s Tommy Milner uploaded this helmet cam video to youtube and unlike the traditional dash cams that only show what’s in front the of Corvette, the helmet cam gives us a perspective of what’s happening inside the cockpit as well.
This video of a driver doing donuts in his driveway is one of the best I’ve seen lately and it sure started my day with a smile. And what’s not to love about a burnout video with a rocking soundtrack, multiple camera angles and a slow-mo replay! Plus if you see that basketball hoop in the back, there is the element of danger that the backend of the Corvette would swing around and wack it. But this driver’s car control skills are excellent and the only “damage” was the burnt rubber left on the driveway.
I love these kinds of videos that show hapless passengers hanging on for dear life as they are taken for a ride around a race track. But for some reason, it’s even more fun when that passenger is your own mother. One driver named Darius not only takes his mom for some hot laps around Laguna Seca in a Corvette Z06, he makes sure a camera captures the whole experience.
Tell me, is there anything more satisfying than the sound you hear when opening up your dual NPP exhaust valves under full acceleration? This custom Corvette ZR1 was surprising docile sounding under normal throttle, but once the traffic cleared in front of him, his foot hit the floor and we heard the monstrous LS9 open up in all it’s glory. The Corvette was so loud, it shocked those around it including the guy who was filming.
Here is some onboard footage from the #73 Corvette C6.R at today’s free practice session. The Corvettes ran well and Magnussen even moved the C6.R into P1 for a few minutes. A somewhat scary moment occurred when the #74 Corvette was reported to be on fire. It turned out to be a minor power steering issue and the team was able to get right back out on track.
During the two hour qualifying session, the GTE PRO standings had the #56 BMW on the provisional pole at 3:58.426. Ferrari and BMW were 2nd and 3rd while the #74 Corvette finished 4th at 3:59.519 and the #73 Corvette was 5th at 3:59.633.
I’m not sure if there is something in the water or if the moon is out of alignment, but there seems to be a recent rash of people getting trapped in Corvettes whose battery has died. We already told you of the one of guy who called 911 after getting locked in his Corvette ZR1, but here is another frustrated gentleman whose calls for help to his friends result in this hilarious video being posted on youtube.
When the announcement came earlier this year that the ALMS would only be shown live on ESPN 3, a lot of us felt left out as we are on non-affiliated cable providers. The thought of missing the entire season was disappointing to say the least. Recently, I literally stumbled across a way to view ESPN3 content. We’ve tested this only twice and both times we were successful in being able to view the programming on ESPN3.com. I really hope I’m not screwing the pooch as they say but if it worked for me, perhaps it may work for you.
