Purple People Eater Corvette Racer Heading to Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale Auction

One of the most famous Corvette race cars in history will go on the auction block at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2016 set for Jan. 23-31.

The Purple People Eater Corvette – which was driven by Florida-based driver Jim Jeffords, who singlehandledly ended the West Coast’s domination of Corvette racing late in the 1950s – was discovered by legendary Corvette enthusiast Chip Miller, founder of what is now Carlisle Events, and Ken Heckert, a restoration shop owner, in the mid-1970s.

Friday night at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, the first retail 2015 Corvette Z06 Convertible wearing VIN 001 was auctioned for charity. Surprising nobody, the winner of the auction was Chevrolet dealer and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick who paid $800,000 for the black and red Z06 droptop.

Our friends at ProTeam Corvette will be in spotlight this Saturday at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in Scottsdale. That’s when a very special Corvette race car with ties to NASCAR will be offered for sale during the “Salon Select 5000 collection”.

We’ve written about ProTeam’s 1953 NASCAR Corvette before which started out as VIN 211 of the first 300 Corvettes built. The first-year Corvette was repurposed as a race car through an internal Chevrolet Shop Order and originally saw action for the 1956 Flying Mile competition on Daytona Beach before entering competition in NASCAR’s International Series for sports cars.

CorvetteBlogger contributor Rick Tavel from Corvetted.com worked with ProTeam Corvette to help write their 50-page flipbook highlighting the research and history of the 1953 NASCAR Corvette and we are fortunate to be able to share some of the important history of this Corvette prior to its auction at Barrett-Jackson.

That’s why Austin, Texas businessman Milton Verret says he is selling his record-breaking Indy 500 #70 Lotus 56-3 and a one-of-a-kind 1978 turbine-powered jet Corvette at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction being held Jan. 10-18, 2015.

Barrett-Jackson Sets Records at 2014 Scottsdale Auction

The curtain came down Sunday, January 19th, on the most successful Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction in history. The FOX televised, eight-day event, sometimes called the “world’s greatest reality show,” was hosted in Barrett-Jackson’s brand new bricks and mortar facility with much improved space and amenities, a building that was completed in only eleven months time and completed only days before the auction start on Sunday, January 12th. Barrett-Jackson’s former main auction tent, the largest tent in the world, was connected to the new permanent auction building and created an impressive almost mile long facility from one end to the other.

Back in 2009 we first told you about Rod Saboury’s wicked street legal 1963 Corvette drag car. The 2,600 hp monster will run the quarter mile in a mere 6.75 seconds at 209 mph. Then, in late 2012, the car showed up on eBay where it failed to sell in October. The Corvette Enthusiast's Preview to Gooding and Co's 2013 Scottsdale Auction

Next up in our Corvette Enthusiast’s Preview of the Scottsdale Auctions, we review the Corvettes available from Gooding and Company.

Gooding & Company focuses on “blue chip” investment cars and usually sets a few world record prices each year in Scottsdale. Gooding is known for selling exceptional quality classic automobiles and producing the highest prices paid for exotic cars at such esteemed venues as Pebble Beach and Amelia Island in addition to Scottsdale and they have the statistics to back up those claims. The average price realized for a car throughout 2012 was $640,635 per car.

Continuing our Corvette Enthusiast’s Preview of the Scottsdale Auctions, we next take a look at the Russo and Steele auction which will feature over 40 Corvettes.

Russo & Steele expect to auction 700 cars in their five day event hosted in their impressive spired tents. The Scottsdale 2013 catalog has just been released and it is filled with sports, muscle, hot rods and customs, the types of cars they specialize in. Quality consignments are a major focus and they try hard to offer individual personalized attention as well as a commitment to not let a car get “lost” because of too many consignments.
