[VIDEO] Chevrolet Puts the 2015 Corvette's Performance Data Recorder to the Test

C7 Corvette Engineer Tadge Juechter has emphasized all along that everything on the new seventh-generation Stingray has a purpose – or it wouldn’t be there.

Same goes for the new Performance Data Recorder that just became available on the 2015 model.

While some might see the new high-definition camera that records what is going on in front of the Stingray as just an electronic play toy, you better believe that Juechter sees it as much more.

[VIDEO] The 2015 Corvette's Peformance Data Recorder Demonstration from the NCM Bash

At the Corvette Museum’s 2014 Bash, Steve Wesoloski from Cosworth was on site to talk about the 2015 Corvette’s Performance Data Recorder. The Performance Data Recorder (also called the PDR) features a high def camera that records front-facing video of the car onto an SD card and then you can overlay a variety of telemetry data over the video. A writer from Engadget.com had the opportunity to test the 2015 Corvette with the Performance Data Recorder at Spring Mountain. The video shown here is directly from the PDR.

The Corvette’s Performance Data Recorder is a built in dash cam with the ability to overlay the car’s telemetry as well as GPS location on a race track. Engadget.com took some laps in the 2015 Corvette Stingray at Spring Mountain to test the new system.

When loaded in Cosworth Toolbox, the data is superimposed on a Bing map of the track and can be compared to a reference lap in real time to help find where you’re losing precious seconds with corner traces, vehicle speed and cornering forces. Obviously, the PDR won’t sell Corvettes — they do that perfectly well all by themselves — but for a novice or pro driver looking to help improve their skills, it seems Chevrolet has put together a very compelling suite of tools.
