[ACCIDENT] Man Pulled from Burning C5 Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car


The driver of a 1998 Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car had to be pulled from the burning car after a wreck near the Chippewa Township, Pa., entrance ramp onto I-376 on Sunday afternoon.

The driver’s side of the convertible was badly damaged in the fire, though the car was still recognizable as a Indianapolis Pace Car on the passenger side, with its distinctive paint job and wheels .

Mark Reuss, GM’s top product development manager and the owner of a 1954 Corvette, will have the honor of driving the 2015 Corvette Z06 Pace Car for the Chevrolet Dual races on Detroit’s Belle Isle this Saturday and Sunday. The Chevrolet Duals are the next events part of the Verizon IndyCar Series which is sharing a weekend of racing on the Belle Isle street course with the TUDOR United SportsCar series.

The fourth generation Corvette (C4) marked its eleventh anniversary in 1995 and the General Motors design team made the C4 more refined than ever before. Corvette took a step up in performance and sophistication with larger brake rotors, traction control and optional run-flat tires. But the big news for 1995 was the selection of Corvette to pace the Indy 500. It marked the third time that the marque would do the honors and the second time that Chevrolet would build a limited number of Pace Car replicas for the public.

Most Memorial Day weekends, NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon is found preparing for the Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. This Memorial Day weekend, he’ll be pulling the infamous “double” with a bit of a twist. While some drivers have attempted to drive both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, Gordon will be in Indianapolis this Sunday to drive the 2015 Corvette Z06 pace car before jetting off to Charlotte to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup 600 mile race later in the day.

A new chapter at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway kicks off this week with the running of the first ever IndyCar Series Grand Prix of Indianapolis this weekend and the Corvette Stingray will be up front for all the action.

That’s because the 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible will be serving as the Pace Car for the inaugural race.

Earlier this month we learned the 2014 Corvette Stingray would be pacing the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500 and now we know who will be driving the Laguna Blue Stingray. Jim Harbaugh, coach of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers has been named the official pace car driver and will lead the 33 Indy Cars and their drivers to the Green Flag this Sunday afternoon.
