When GM returned to the Nurburgring to validate the 2012 Corvettes, the ZR1 wasn’t the only car driven by test driver Jim Mero. Mero also drove a black 2012 Corvette Z06, outfitted with the Z07 chassis package, and posted a lap time of 7:22.68. The new lap time for the Z06 is just 3 seconds off the record-setting 7:19.63 time Mero recently recorded in the ZR1 while besting the previous Z06 record at the Nurburgring by nearly 20 seconds.
Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter said at the Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash in April that they would be looking to make a trip to the famous 12.9 mile Nordschleife for final validation of the supercharged C6 ZR1. We just didn’t realize it would be so soon! Judging from the new official video from Chevrolet showing test driver Jim Mero piloting the 638-hp Corvette to a time of 7:19.63, an 6 second improvement over the famous high speed run in July 2008, I would have to say that final validation was most definitely a success.
The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires found on the upcoming 2012 Corvette Z06 and ZR1′s represent the pinnacle of performance for tires on a Corvette and they are another example of the technology transfer from the racing team to the production sports car. This video from GM was part of the 2012 Corvette data dump which came out last Thursday while we were in route to the Corvette Museum. As an added twist to the introduction of the new tire for Corvette, team members at the C5/C6 Bash stated that another run of the Nurburgring may be in order.
Nissan’s GT-R made a run in 2009 against the ZR1 on the world famous Nordschleife and they came within .3 of a second of the Corvette’s 7:26.4 lap. Two years later, the newly upgraded 2012 GT-R goes at it again, this time besting the Corvette by two seconds with a 7:24.22 lap. Check out the laps after the jump.

Nurburgring, Germany – Around the world the and especially in Germany the name Nurburgring has deep meaning in the hearts of motorsport enthusiasts. The track originally opened in 1927 and was revised into it’s current layout in 1984. The course is divided into two components. The first is the sixteen turn 5.148 km (3.199 mile) Formula One course. The second is the one hundred and fifty four turn 20.81 km (12.93 mile) Nordschleife (North Course) circuit.
Here’s a video posted on Facebook by the FIA GT1 World Championship guys showing a stock Corvette Grand Sport on a hot lap of the Nurburgring. Who doesn’t love a Corvette attacking the green hell, right? But what makes this video really interesting is that the Grand Sport doing the hot lap is wearing Michigan Manufactuer license plates. Kinda makes you wonder why it’s over there…
This midyear Corvette was parked alongside one of the turns at the famous Nurburgring in Germany and from the video it appears the car was stalled. Not a great place to be as a recent rainstorm had passed through leaving the track wet and several cars had trouble navigating the turn as the video shows. Eventually, the driver got the Corvette started and was able to move to a safer location.
Corvette Racing driver Jan Magnussen made headlines last season when his battle at Laguna Seca with the #45 Flying Lizards Porsche ended with Mags going into the wall. We spoke with Jan prior to the start of the 2010 12 Hours of Sebring and asked him about the incident and whether he has talked with Jorg Bergmeister since the incident. We also asked Jan about his running the Nurburgring in a Corvette ZR1 last fall and if he thought he could be Jim Mero’s 7:26.4 time.

The Corvette ZR1′s Nürburgring lap time of 7:26.4 last month has indelibly cemented the fact that this is the fastest Corvette ever produced by General Motors. Driven by GM Development Engineer Jim Mero, the Corvette ZR1 ran a blistering lap with speeds approaching 180 mph on the 12.9 mile, 100 corner Nordschleife besting the previous fastest Corvette, a Z06 driven in 2005 by Jan Magnussen by nearly 17 seconds. The video of this historic run was released this afternoon by GM and can be viewed after the jump.
