Michelin Announces New Pilot Sport A/S 3+ All Season Tire at NAIAS

Here’s some great news from our friends at Michelin for those Corvette owners who like to drive their cars all year round.

This week at the North American International Auto Show, Michelin introduced the latest edition to the Pilot family of performance tires – the Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season 3+.

Helping to introduce the new tires was Corvette Racing’s Tommy Milner, who was there to showcase Michelin’s commitment for transferring the best high-performance racing technology into a street tire made for North America roads.

Corvettes and white letter tires go hand and hand. Like many classic Corvette owners, my 1966 Corvette Sting Ray is wearing a set of white letter BF Goodrich Radial T/As. I think it gives it that ‘period’ look which is a bit racier in my opinion than going with a traditional white wall tire.

So when we found this Corvette Z06 with the painted Michelin’s, I feel like I get the look that the owner was trying to convey.

[VIDEO] Weather Channel's Jim Cantore Takes a Corvette Hot Lap on Michelin's Test Track

Let’s take an inside look at one reason (or four reasons, actually) why the seventh-generation Corvette Stingray handles so well.

We all know that Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter and his talented crew worked wonders making the 2014 Corvette such an improvement over previous models.

Now watch this video to see our host, Meteorologist Jim Cantore from The Weather Channel, go on a Corvette hot lap in a Laguna Blue Stingray around the Michelin Laurens Proving Grounds in South Carolina, which consists of more than a dozen special tracks and surfaces for tire and suspension system testing, driving training, and event management, all situated on 3,300 acres.

Corvette Z06/Z07 Tires and Brakes Parts Cost More than a Chevy Cruze

A new 2015 Corvette Z06 armed with the Z07 performance package is one of the most potent track weapons available. The Z07 adds carbon ceramic brake rotors for increased stopping power and those wheels are wrapped in sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires.

Anyone tracking these cars on a regular basis will need replacement parts, especially when it comes to two of racings most consumable items behind fuel: tires and brakes.

A user on Jalopnik’s Opposite Lock shared a quote from a Chevrolet dealer’s parts counter. Shockingly, a set of rotors, new Michelin tires and brake pads cost more than a new 2015 Chevrolet Cruze.

Corvette Forum user “sdtoothdoc” was pretty excited to finally be receiving his new eight-speed automatic Corvette Z06 last week, but that excitement has been tempered after he noticed a series cracks on his high performance Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 tires.

In the C7 Z06 forum, the new Z06 owner posts:

“Hey guys…my A8 Z finally got here in San Diego and took her home a few miles away. As suspected, all 4 tires have cracks like Dennis’s from Las Vegas. When at the dealer, they said that 4 other Stingrays all have the same cracks in the tires. “

The three-year agreement names Michelin as the official tire of the NCM Motorsports Park and provides the company with product privileges and displays at both the Museum and the Park.

Michelin will also serve as the presenting sponsor for three events to be held at the NCM and the Motorsports Park during the term of the contract.

[VIDEO] Engineers Discuss the New Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Tires on the 2012 Corvette

The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires found on the upcoming 2012 Corvette Z06 and ZR1’s represent the pinnacle of performance for tires on a Corvette and they are another example of the technology transfer from the racing team to the production sports car. This video from GM was part of the 2012 Corvette data dump which came out last Thursday while we were in route to the Corvette Museum. As an added twist to the introduction of the new tire for Corvette, team members at the C5/C6 Bash stated that another run of the Nurburgring may be in order.
