Mecum's Spring Indy Event Delivers on Second Generation Corvettes

Dana Mecum’s spectacular annual Spring Indy Auction is now history and though the auction set pricing records with two Mustangs that sold for over a million dollars each, it was more of a “mixed bag” when it came to Corvettes.

It was really no surprise to see the 200 quality Corvettes Mecum uncovered and offered for sale just prior to his Bloomington Gold Events which is totally Corvette focused. And it was the quality level of Corvettes which accounted for the good and bad news.

Mecum's Indy Auction Offering Corvette Treasures

Dana Mecum’s name is being changed to “Indiana Mecum” because like “Indiana Jones” he has a way of finding treasures, Corvette treasures, and offering them for sale at his vaunted Indianapolis Spring Auction, May 14th through May 19th.

This year “Indiana Mecum” will auction over 2,000 collector cars and motorcycles during his six day extravaganza. But as usual, he saves the real “treasures” to auction on Saturday, May 18th. On that special day Mecum is offering no less than twenty five Corvettes centered around seven high-end, meticulously restored award winning second generation cars, three third generation Corvettes and five restomodded vettes. One of the most iconic Corvette designs of all time is the 1963 Split Window Corvette Coupe. 1963 was the first year for a fixed roof coupe for Corvette and it was also the only year that the rear window was separated into two. It is sought after by collectors everywhere and always generates a crowd when a special one is available for sale.

And when we say special, its no wonder that collector John Justo had this ’63 Split Window as the crown jewel in his collection. An unrestored original with a mere 5,500 miles on the odometer, its also the winner of the most prestigious awards in the Corvette hobby.

Mecum vs Barrett-Jackson By the Numbers

Mecum vs Barrett-Jackson By the Numbers

When the final car crossed the block in Kissimmee, Florida at Mecum’s 2013 event and the totals were in, the stage was set to determine the winner of the “Superbowl” of auctions. Over the last several weeks it was hard to avoid all of the auction coverage that took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, headlined with the extravaganza staged by Barrett-Jackson, and the east coast contender, Mecum. To many readers it may have seemed a bit confusing as to just what was the “premier” auction event in January, Barrett-Jackson or Mecum. I’m not sure that we can designate which auction was “best” since that is a subjective evaluation and dependent on individual tastes. But for those of you who have a penchant for numbers, we can provide you with a numbers comparison to help you decide the destination of your 2014 plane ticket.
