Chevrolet dealer Bob McDorman spent years assembling one of the finest and most diverse collections of Corvettes. With models spanning each year of production from 1953 through 2009, Bob also sought out low VIN Corvettes, pace cars and Corvettes previously owned by GM executives and celebrities. In addition to his Corvettes, Bob’s collection also featured other Chevrolets and tons of memoriabilia that only a dealer could assemble.

Corvette Auction Results: Bob McDorman's Corvette Sales Total $5 Million

It was right around 2pm on Saturday, November 6th when the first Corvette rolled up onto the auction block. Within 3 or 4 minutes the Polo White 1953 roadster had a new owner. This process repeated ‘Vette after ‘Vette for roughly the next 3 hours. The auction block, covered in the traditional Mecum Auctions red color scheme, was packed full of eager bidders throughout the Corvette portion of the docket. The earlier cars could barely been seen due to the mass of people, often times 5-6 deep, surrounding them. The crowd lessened as the auction moved on, but the block was always full of people.

The white text near the bottom of the front cover of Mecum Auctions’ lot catalog reads simply: “The World Greatest Chevrolet Collector”. After flipping through just a few pages of the paper or online catalog versions, it would be very difficult to disagree with that statement. Bob McDorman has been in the Chevrolet sales business for nearly 50 years. In that time he’s accumulated countless classic and modern Chevy’s in his immense collection. On Saturday, November 6th, Bob will sell the final portion of his collection all at no reserve in a sale hosted by Mecum Auctions at McDorman’s dealership in Canal Winchester, OH. In addition the numerous other models of Chevrolet’s being sold, there are nearly 90 highly desirable Corvettes up for grabs as well. With model years ranging from 1953 to 2009 there’s sure to be something for everyone. Celebrity owned, GM styling cars, early VIN’s, and one off’s fill the docket. Our favorite non-original L88 Shriner Corvette is back on the market again. The 1967 “L88″ Shriner COPO Corvette crossed the block at Mecum’s St. Charles auction on Saturday where it reached a high bid of $80,000 but failed to reach its reserve price. Longtime readers of CorvetteBlogger may recognize this as the same car whose listing on eBay in December 2005 was pulled after the Corvette community challenged the sale as a real-deal L88 Corvette.

Mecum’s auction last weekend at Monterey featured some of the best collectible Corvettes available. Sales of Corvettes totaled $3,238,250 lead by the first 1967 L88 Corvette which sold for $1.25 million. Of the 59 Corvettes that crossed the block, 24 received a SOLD sticker for an auction success rate of 41%.

I have been informed by several readers that the first L88 Corvette did sell at $1.25 million at the Mecum at Monterey auction. A review of the mecum.com results confirms this. I apologize for the error.

The first documented L88 Corvette sold at the Mecum at Monterey auction yesterday afternoon for $1,250,000. The mid year was the first documented 427/430 hp Corvette that was campaigned by Tony DeLorenzo in the SCCA A Production class. Years later the Corvette was restored and won awards from Bloomington Gold and the NCRS.

Noted Corvette collector and baseball legend Reggie Jackson will be offering four Corvettes at the Mecum at Monterey auction on August 13-14th at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa. Also included in his collection are 12 VIN #1 Corvettes and other low serial number Corvettes, as well as several previous celebrity-owned Corvettes from the likes of Burt Reynolds, Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell and my cousin Leanza Cornett, who was Miss America in 1993.
