No Sale! $1.25 Million Not Enough to Buy First 1967 L88 Corvette

I have been informed by several readers that the first L88 Corvette did sell at $1.25 million at the Mecum at Monterey auction. A review of the mecum.com results confirms this. I apologize for the error.

The first documented L88 Corvette sold at the Mecum at Monterey auction yesterday afternoon for $1,250,000. The mid year was the first documented 427/430 hp Corvette that was campaigned by Tony DeLorenzo in the SCCA A Production class. Years later the Corvette was restored and won awards from Bloomington Gold and the NCRS.

Noted Corvette collector and baseball legend Reggie Jackson will be offering four Corvettes at the Mecum at Monterey auction on August 13-14th at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa. 1967 Corvette - 1st RPO L88 Built

Most of the major automotive auction houses will be decending on Monterey, California in mid-August for a weekend full of classic and collector car sales. We’re reviewing the dockets and selecting the best of the best to present to you here on CorvetteBlogger.com.

First up in our Countdown to Monterey series is Lot #S125 from the Mecum at Monterey auction. This 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible features the 427/430 hp tri-power L88 engine and is documented to be the very first RPO L88 built. In 1965, Zora Arkus-Duntov’s Engineering group began developing the new 427 Mark IV engine for use in the Corvette as a full-bore endurance racing engine, and in 1967 their work came to fruition in the form of the RPO L88 option package.

Mecum wrapped up another Muscle Cars and More auction this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. A total of 39 Corvettes ranging from a 1956 roadster to a 2005 Coupe crossed the auction block with 22 Corvettes changing hands. The total take was a mere $362,650 as the Corvettes averaged a 56% success rate for sales.

Bloomington Gold Corvette Sales Total $4.5 Million

Mecum’s Collector Car auction wrapped up the 2 day sale at the Bloomington Gold Corvette Show in suburban Chicago on Saturday. When the last gavel fell, Mecum had sold 138 of 321 Corvettes for a sales success rate of 43% and a sales total of $4,553,550.

Friday's Corvette Sales at Bloomington Gold Total Nearly $1.2 Million

Mecum’s auction at Bloomington Gold sold 63 of 123 Corvettes today bringing in $1.19 million in sales. That’s a 51% success rate. The top seller was a 1957 Cascade Green Roadster which sold for $80,500 while $3,500 purchased a rather tired looking 1984 Coupe. Six of the top ten sales leaders were midyear Corvettes. Auction Results: Mecums Spring Classic Corvette Sales Total $6.7 Million

Mecum’s Collector Car Auction wrapped up their 23rd Annual Spring Classic in Indianapolis on Sunday. Over the five day sale, we witnessed 194 Corvettes crossing the auction block with 128 of those cars selling. Sales for Corvettes totaled $6,720,550 and the sales success rate was 66%.
